I'm looking forward to getting to this one in my review series. I've avoided spoilers for a good half of the series though, so I can't really comment further, other than that I love the bodiy possession trope and am wondering if this will change my views as well.

(Makes me happy to see TNG confessions on here!)

I don't remember this episode very well, but yeah. I've been extremely squicked by the portrayal of themes and narrative kinks I normally enjoy too. It sucks when something you enjoy as a fantasy concept gets too fucking real.

This reminds me continue my TNG rewatch. It's been years since I've seen it all. I'm still on the first season rn.

Body possession has always creeped me out too. Your body acting on someone else's accord freaks me out a bit.

Oh man, this. This was the CREEPIEST episode.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-08-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Doctor Ira Graves caressing Data's neck, from the TV show "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Ira has his back kind of turned to the viewer, obscuring his face. He is a middle-aged man with light rosy skin, very short light hair and wearing a very light brown jacket or sweater. Data is an android with pale skin and short dark hair slicked back. He is wearing a dark blazer of sorts. He is looking down, sort of confused.]

This The Next Generation episode ruined the bodily possession trope for me. (It's "The Schizoid Man" from season 2, by the way.)

I never had a problem with the trope before. But something about how Graves acted while in Data's body (and how it was described) gave off such a strong, detailed, palpable vibe of someone smothering and trapping another and violating every aspect of their autonomy by animating their body and words in ways the original would never act or speak that it made me noticeably distressed for several days and ruined the high-concept-ness and fantastic-ness of all other instances of possession in any fiction ever. The way he systematically psychologically manipulated Data into trusting him and volunteering information about himself was also unusually squicky for the show.

Secret because: No one seems to discuss individual Star Trek The Next Generation episodes anymore.

Teeny correction: he's not caressing his neck. He grabbed Data by the head and roughly turned it back and forth (he also did the same to his arms I think) like he was testing out the joints of a doll or a piece of equipment. I remember this because of how uncomfortable that made me.

Of course, you can't tell from the screencap here, but just thought I'd mention it ;)

Thanks, I'll correct that!

op i will discuss individual episodes with you i will discuss episodes unendingly with you

tng is my favorite :(

I think one of the reasons that episode was creepy was that Graves didn't just make Data's body do bad things. He made him do embarrassing things. That cringeworthy eulogy, saying arrogant snotty shit to people, being a creep to that girl he was in love with, whining and snarking childishly, etc. Somehow, embarrassing stuff is more visceral than evil stuff.

OTOH, I seriously love that scene at the end where Data wakes up and is politely confused and sweet and perky and babbling and Picard knows immediately that he's back to normal :)

Picard's no fool.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I'm guessing you've never seen The Exorcist, Anon, or any other movie that makes a serious attempt to portray possession 'realistically'--as in, the classic theological version. (Also guessing that you're probably not Catholic.) I can watch Supernatural all day long, but keep those pea-soup-spewing kids the fuck away!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a problem with the episode in the way you describe, maybe because I always thought the trope had inherently creepy potential and that was the point? The episode reeeeallly gets that point across brilliantly, and the fact that it's uncomfortable to watch just emphasizes that.

OP, this was an incredibly creeptastic episode and I was irrationally angry throughout the whole thing the first time I saw it.

(Also, I wish people discussed individual TNG eps, too. I miss the AV Club's reviews, sigh.)

Oh god, that episode is incredibly creepy. It's not even the possession aspect that disturbs me, though, it's the sheer manipulation! Getting Data to call him Grandpa, especially. Shudder.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And here I was, thinking that body snatching/possession tropes were always meant to be creepy??? What is the problem here exactly?
