4. ...I'm confused. Why isn't Moulin Rouge! a musical?

[identity profile] valorously.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to ask the same thing. :/

[identity profile] dots.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a movie ... with musical numbers! I'm pretty sure that's all it takes to qualify.

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think the OP is saying it isn't because it is a movie-style musical, not a musical from an actual stage. I sort of see her point, but I still disagree - no, it's not Broadway but it's certainly still a musical.

[identity profile] dots.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can understand the point behind it, but ... it's still wrong :/

[identity profile] mollypocket.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
A musical usually has a full original score? I'm not sure what this person is basing their definition on. >_>;;

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, technically it does have an original score! All those songs were original at some point, right? >.>

[identity profile] mcruthless.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Beats me, cause I can think of three musicals that don't have "full original scores" off the top of my head. (Mamma Mia!, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Jersey Boys, etc.)

[identity profile] mollypocket.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing! Are we to say that those aren't musicals? O_o

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Also All Shook Up, that one with Queen music, and I don't know how many people count the recent movie Across the Universe as a musical, but I do...

[identity profile] mcruthless.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, now people are saying it's not a musical because it was never performed on stage which would mean by there standards Across the Universe isn't a musical either.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of musicals regardless if they're on a stage or in front of a camera.

[identity profile] batmarg.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seems like a musical to me.

[identity profile] tiptoe39.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Musicals have music written *for* them.

:looks at Five Guys Named Moe, Mamma Mia, etc., and shuts the fuck up:

[identity profile] aishiteru.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The only halfway decent explanation I can think of is that Moulin Rouge was never staged or even produced for the stage; it was just a movie.

.. but that's still not a very good justification, if you ask me. >>;

even though that wouldn't really work considering Hairspray was ORIGINALLY A MOVIE but whatevs.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-10-08 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen the original movie, though? It wasn't adapted for the stage; it was completely redone. See also: most Disney musicals.

[identity profile] mellow-dk.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Would the OP say that Singin' in the Rain isn't a musical too? Since it was originally a movie and none of the songs were written for the movie.

By my definition too. Dignity, always diginty.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
7 brides for 7 brothers is the same.

[identity profile] aetheristic.livejournal.com 2007-10-08 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
100% agreed. Of course it's a musical.
