According to musical theatre snobs, "true" musicals are those performed for the stage.

I dunno, Dictionary.com says a musical is "a play or motion picture in which the story line is interspersed with or developed by songs, dances, and the like."

Dictionary.com has never lied to me before. :S

I think it is a musical without question, only that stage musicals and film musicals are two distinct things with different attributes.

The primary justification is that the musical numbers in the movie do not move the plot forward. Some are the setting for montages that help some things pass quicker, but they do not move the plot forward.

That said, I don't dislike Moulin Rouge; its underappreciated older sister Strictly Ballroom is way better though.
