4. As a musical theatre snob, I would like to say that you give musical theatre snobs a bad name.

No, it's not a stage musical. Yes, I'm annoyed when people cite it as their favorite musical (although not nearly as annoyed as I am when people cite High School Musical as their favorite musical...) On the other hand, I would never claim that it's not a musical at all. Movie musicals have their pluses as well, and I could cite a dozen of them that I love despite their not being stage musicals.

Although, um. My favorite musical is Chess, which probably means I should never criticize anyone else's taste in favorite-musicals ever.

WHUT.

CHESS ROCKS. D: D: D:

Ugh, the entire "musical snob scene" kind of gets on my nerves because it seems to me that musicals go in and out of style fairly quickly, and if you're caught STILL liking last year's favorite, say goodbye to your credibility! When I first got into musicals, to be respected, you were supposed to dig RENT. And then RENT got popular, so everyone espoused the virtues of Into the Woods. *shrug* Oh, and never, ever get caught praising gateway musicals like Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera. The moment you're introduced to Sondheim, those are to immediately dismissed as asinine! :P

Uh, my point was: Chess is love. Hi.

......... I think my head might explode if I ever heard those words come out of someone's mouth. I'd like to snobbishly venture that HSM isn't a musical just because it's so...

... so...

I MEAN, MAYBE IF IT WERE A SELF AWARE PARODY OF HIGH SCHOOL MOVIE TROPES, BUT NO. I've never seen anything so oblivious to it's cliche narrative. T___T

Not that it's not a musical because of how cliche it is.

I wish I could say it wasn't a musical, because I would like to disassociate it FROM musicals.

I know what you mean about the scene being incredibly insane. It really, really is, and ugh, I hate how people are penalized for liking certain shows and actors, or for not liking other certain shows and actors. Or even when it's just really sharply divided (like the incredible division in Broadway fandom between those who like Spring Awakening and those who think it's overrated shit. I don't care about it either way, and really, if somebody else thinks it's the Best Thing Ever or the Worst Thing Since Bye, Bye, Birdie that's really not any of my business, is it?) In short: Yeah. The scene is insane.

But Chess wins everything. God, I love that show so much.

I actually have heard someone claim that. It's THAT MUCH WORSE because I know her, she's a friend of mine, I like and respect her and know that she actually knows about at least some good musicals AND THEN SHE GOES AND CLAIMS THAT and OMG I just want to shake some sense into her. If HSM knew it was a parody it could've been AWESOME but it didn't and it continues not to realize that and I...just...*stammers out hate* I hate that damn thing so, so much.

So. Um. Chess! Best musical ever. In any of its dozens of scripts.
