I carry a small stuffed yellow duck in my purse and briefcase. I'm 37.

You're not alone, OP. I still sleep with my bunny plushie beside me. Oh, and I'm 28 soon to be 29.

Fun story, OP: Without focusing too much on my weird disorders, I'd completely lost the ability to cry sometime last year. Not sure why, exactly, my emotions just sort of...shut down on me, and I couldn't really feel much of anything.

Fast-forward to about a month ago, when my brother gave this game (and his PS3) to me as a gift.

Around the point where the robed figure is struggling up the mountain against impossibly strong winds, I started crying. By the time I was flying above the mountains with the blue skies and bright light and that swelling orchestra I almost had to stop because I was crying so hard. Even now I'm not sure why, I wasn't sad, maybe it's that it just felt so beautiful and hopeful-- and I was feeling.

Since then I've worn a little necklace I made for myself out of a red scrap of fabric and some gold paint. It makes me feel better about everything. I have a white one too, but I haven't worn it yet, I feel like it's not the right time...but maybe it will be soon.

In other words, you keep that plushie, and don't ever let anyone get you down about it. ♥

Forgot to mention, I'll be 29 next month.

Whatever works, OP. I still sleep with stuffed animals.

Ah, we all have our things. Whatever it takes to make life just a little easier, anon.

I still feel weird if my rabbit plush isn't chilling out on my bed next to me when I sleep. >>

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a teddy bear. He was given to me at my christening, he's pretty much as old as I am, and he's been one of the few constants of my life. He's too big to carry around daily, but he sleeps on the pillow next to me and if I'm staying so much as a night anywhere else, he comes in my backpack.

I'm 27. That bear is more than a quarter century old. He's my best friend and will be so long as he manages to hold together.

The little things that make you feel good are things worth keeping. What other people think really doesn't matter a damn.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hon, I'm in my 50's and I have a couple of little stuffies I sometimes carry around.

One is a black rabbit with an outfit on of red striped pants and a muslin top with a tiny bird embroidered on it.

And the other is a palm sized grey teddy bear my mom made years ago. She passed away in 2001, so it's very special to me.

I still take a stuffed animal everywhere I go and I still buy one whenever I'm visiting a new place. I'm 22.

[Picture is the player-controlled character of the videogame "Journey". The character is an apparently humanoid figure wearing a huge maroon red robe with golden geometrical trims and a geometrical scarf with glowing sylphs. They are also wearing maroon red pants. Beneath the robe's cowl, there is only a pair of bright, maybe light yellow eyes shining on a dark shroud in complete darkness. The figure is standing on a dune in a desert, with the sun shining behind floating sand and a bright light in the distance, possibly on the top of a mountain or a huge structure.]

I sometimes have panic attacks or bouts of depression. I carry a plushie of this guy wherever I go. ...Yes, even at work. I'm walking around a grocery store with this guy in my pocket.

Secret because: I am way too old to be carrying around a plushie.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
bah, as long as you are not getting in trouble at work and you can do your job just fine, who even cares

no one who matters, that's who

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
My dad works in a hotel. He comes back with stories sometimes about how his 50-something colleagues who absolutely must have a teddy bear or plushie that they take with them when they go overseas. There's nothing wrong with comfort items. It's a common thing!

Also you have a Journeyer plushie, I'm jealous. Where can I find one?

Yeah. I can relate to this a lot. Whenever I feel really bad about stuff I just want to bring one of my stuffed toys out with me too. I've carried ones bigger than what fits in my pocket out before. It's not hurting anyone else and it helps me feel better, so it shouldn't matter!

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-08-21 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 30 years old. When my anxiety and/or depression get to be really bad, I drag around a little plush toy of Vivi from FFIX. There's no shame in having a safety item, OP. Do what you have to do to get through the day.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have a stuffed dragon that stays wrapped around the posts of my bed. I'm 31.

sometimes I pretend it's watching me have sex

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
i want to hug this secret because it gives me comfort that i'm not alone.

(i don't have a journey plushie but i have a puppy one)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
OP I stuffer from depression as well. I have a small stuffed shark that sits with me while I watch TV or play on the computer. He is such a badass that I don't have to worry about things when he is around. He makes me feel better and if you little friend makes you feel better than you carry it around as much as you need. At times life can be hard for people with mental illness and we can use all the support we can get even if it's coming from a little plushie.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
That's adorable and you should feel good about it.
I'm 27 and have two plushies - a small crow and a fox - sitting in my car (which in turn is named after one of my OCs).

And seriously, considering the game is basically just one big catharsis, I think this little guy is just perfect to carry around when you need something to lift you up mentally.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, like everyone says: having a plushie to comfort you is all sweet and many people do it yaddayadda...
what I really wanna say is: that game is so fucking overrated, and everyone gets all teared up about it, it pisses me the fuck off. yes I've played it, and I was physically enraged at how it tries to generate emotion in the player with the fucking cheapest tricks imaginable. the music is 50% ghibli rip off, the athmosphere screams ico/wanda and the gameplay is fucking tedious and completely pointless. oh and of course it has a vaguely oriental setting, because that's all spiritual and so on. I wanna puke.

You're def not too old! Especially when it's about Journey! I want that plushie too.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my goodness, I want to give you the biggest hug right now, fellow traveller. Journey was life-changing for me too. I can't think of a more beautiful, more fitting work of art to draw strength and comfort from. Don't ever feel shame about it.

Sending you love and friendly chirps. Hang in there and keep journeying on, I promise you'll reach the summit someday. <3
