I have yet to see Pacific Rim, but I thought they were just robots piloted by people. Why the specific rules for what gendered pronouns should be used? Is it referred to that way in film? I am genuinely baffled.

Well, I really like Del Toro, robots, and kaiju so I probably will see it. But only when it comes out to the dollar theatre because I am horribly cheap and refuse to spend ten bucks on a film, no matter how much I want to see it.
