Why? I have not seen the movie but the robot is blue, which is typically a masculine color. I -think- it was first piloted by two guys. Then by a guy and girl. There is just as much reason for it to be called "he" than "she".

you're not wrong, even if you get yelled at for this. there's no reason for assigning gender to the machine any which way.

I'm pretty sure the robot is repeatedly referred to as 'she' in the movie, so 'he' would be an indication that the writer wasn't paying attention as much as that they like male defaults.

It is a vehicle as well as a giant monster-punching mech thing. They are typically and traditionally referred to with female pronouns.

1. It's a vehicle
2. It's specifically referred to as She.

What the fuck is you're problem with this? Does it really deal your male ego such a blow to have a 'She' in your giant robot monster movie?

I have yet to see Pacific Rim, but I thought they were just robots piloted by people. Why the specific rules for what gendered pronouns should be used? Is it referred to that way in film? I am genuinely baffled.

Never seen the film (Am so behind) but the fact that this robot is called Gipsy makes me think immediately of gypsy rose lee.
I just can't visualize a male called Gipsy. Just not registering in my head as a male name.

You're not alone on this, OP. It doesn't bother me as much with the other Jaegers, but using anything other than female pronouns for Gipsy has me hitting the back button.

Does this happen?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, vehicles and machines in general are typically referred to as 'she', and even if someone breaks the mold and wants to use a different gendered pronoun for a change, Gypsy Danger was specifically referred to as 'she' (i.e. Mako: "How long has it been since you've seen her heart?" as the workers fix-up the Jaeger's nuclear reactor power core).

Even if someone wanted to call some Jaegers 'he', a totally understandable idea, I'm not sure how or why anyone would refer to this specific Jaeger as anything but 'she'.

Tangent:

Oddly enough, in my head, I think of Gypsy and Cherno as female, and Typhoon as male, but I never seem to think of Striker in gendered terms at all. o.O

I saw someone on tumblr arguing that Gipsy is a 'he' because she looks like a 'he'

It's a fucking humanoid robot. It doesn't look like either gender. The characters all call her a she, get over it and stop trying to be ~special~

I rolled my eyes and blocked though. Shoulda reblogged with a you're an idiot comment or something

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-08-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why so many people are shouting misogyny for calling it a "he" instead of a "She" anyway. I always thought the whole "Let's call this object a woman!" to be kind of sexist/objectifying in the first place. I mean, I don't get up in arms about it or anything, but...

[Picture is the Jaeger/giant robot/mecha called Gipsy Danger from the movie "Pacific Rim". It is made of many metallic, blue plates, with some black parts in the joints and spine and some red highlights.]

If you call Gipsy 'he' I won't read your fic. "She", "it" or Get The Fuck Out.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought of them as ships, so they'd all be 'she' when someone would be speaking about a Jaeger.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the movie, but GOD does this fandom seem judgey and insufferable.

It's weird, because in the movie the robot is referred to with female pronouns so I just assumed it was the same as calling a ship "she," but in the art book they use "he" and "his" for all the Jaegers. It was very jarring for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
it's a robot, you morons

it doesn't have feelings because it's a fucking robot

is this like transformers where all the nutjobs write fanfic about machines having personified carburetor sex with each other... because i def don't want to see this movie in that case

Female robot named Gipsy... okay, am I the only one whose brain went immediately to MST3K? Fandom, I am disappoint.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Same here if you call striker a "she". Striker's a guy.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Good people of the internet, please stop. The Gipsy Danger is a ship. It is a human-shaped tank, a giant gun that people can ride in. It does not have a gender or personality. It is called "she" because ships are called "she" in seagoing/military history. This argument is nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen this movie. I don't care about this movie.

But all these people whining, "Ew, wrong pronoun for sexless, genderless robot gags me!" make me want to write really good fanfic about this movie and refer to this robot thing as a "he". Possible as Mr. Gipsy Danger, at that.

('course, I tend to refer to my vehicles by male pronouns anyway.)
