Does this happen?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, vehicles and machines in general are typically referred to as 'she', and even if someone breaks the mold and wants to use a different gendered pronoun for a change, Gypsy Danger was specifically referred to as 'she' (i.e. Mako: "How long has it been since you've seen her heart?" as the workers fix-up the Jaeger's nuclear reactor power core).

Even if someone wanted to call some Jaegers 'he', a totally understandable idea, I'm not sure how or why anyone would refer to this specific Jaeger as anything but 'she'.

Tangent:

Oddly enough, in my head, I think of Gypsy and Cherno as female, and Typhoon as male, but I never seem to think of Striker in gendered terms at all. o.O

But on the other hand people switch genders for other characters all the time so why is doing the same with her so bad?

But that can be annoying, though I don't think switching a machine's gender is as bad.

da - In this case, chances are the person doing the switching is doing it just to be contrary or ~edgy~ and people don't appreciate it.

it seems more likely to me that they just didn't think about it

malice, incompetence, etc

ayrt - my lenses for this a coloured by seeing tumblr rants about how gipsy is obviously a boy because ?(????)? and canon is wrong. I'm going to assume contrary asshole first everything else second - unless it is literally a Rule 63 AU

fair enough, i guess

If they wanted to label their fic "Gipsy Danger genderswap" or "always-a-boy!Gipsy" then more power to them. But just randomly swapping the pronouns without any indication of a motive other than failure to pay attention is annoying.

Those fics are usually marked with Rule 63 or Genderswap tags.

Gipsy Danger has always felt like a male and is so frustrated at everyone misgendering him all this time.
