Well "breathtakingly beautiful" is subjective but she definitely has that healthy, wholesome, radiance that is kind of the base line of universal beauty. And well they are magical creatures so wouldn't much of their appeal be in their aura~ or something especially since beauty is so subjective.

Plus IDK that it's true in this case but I distinctly get the impression most people who disliked her casting wanted a more delicate overdone western ideal beauty when I get the impression they were going for a more naturalized "corn-fed" look.

I think Harry mentioned that once you stop hearing their song, Veelas don't look that pretty any more. That, and we only saw them through Harry's eyes, who was considerably more affected than Hermione. Her description would be quite different, I guess.

This is a good point. I was going to make a comment in the same vein as the 'aura' thing but couldn't put it into words. xD

I remember being surprised by the choice of casting (I think I was expecting someone else, but I can't remember who) but not altogether too bothered. She did a good job with the role, I think.

Right, and they wanted a girl who was French (like the character) and looked like a naturally beautiful teenage girl. Clemence Poesy definitely fits that bill, even if she isn't some delicate fae creature.
