Read any good books lately?

[personal profile] souljelly 2013-08-21 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to read 'Cloud Atlas' but it's not going too well. I think it's something that requires more focus that I can manage at the moment.

I'm also reading a book about a guy beating blackjack in Vegas. I love that kind of thing (and shows like Hustle, etc.) it seems so glamorous and intense - or at least, this book's making it out to be.

I keep saying I am going to read some books but then I read fanfiction instead. But the last book I read was John Dies At The End. Pretty good book. Not as scary as everyone hyped it to be (not scary at all really).

Haha, I do that too! Been on a huge fic binge, but my own writing inspiration tends to wane a bit when I've oversaturated my brain on fanfic, hence the need for some good old fashioned books.

Never heard of that, but scary-but-not-really-scary is something I can get behind. I'm a bit of a wuss, ha. I'll check it out :)

Haha. I do this too. I say I need to read a book but then I just read novel length fic instead.

Considering that there are quite a few published authors around who also still publish epic-length fics in fandoms, it's not always that different!

The best book I've read lately was Silk by Caitlin Kiernan. Early 90s lesbian grunge horror set in Alabama.

That sounds fantastic. -Adds to 'to read' list-

I really haven't read enough LGBTQ+ romance novels. :\
thene: Fang, Vanille and the space between them. (awakened)

I've never read any romance novels, except the odd genre classic like Rebecca... Just not my genre of choice, lol.

Two short story collections, one by Avram Davidson and one by James Blaylock.

They're both super rad. I really enjoy both of them as writers, albeit in very different ways. James Blaylock is a writer that I just appreciate so much in so many different ways - even just on the level of his settings, of how he describes place, of his atmosphere, of his use of supernatural elements. It's just so right.

I'm working my way through a recommendation list of lesbian novels for summer reading. I'm five down, and thus far every one of them has been shockingly bad. :(

That sounds fun :( Your taste is clearly very different from the reccer's...maybe you should try something else, like looking for lesbian novels within a genre you already know you like?

Re: Read any good books lately?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
In the reccer's defence, I begin to suspect I'm too picky to be helped. I want lots of feelings and fluffy happiness with plenty of narrative focus on the relationship. And I want adults rather than teens. Unfortunately, this puts me squarely in the 'romance novel' genre. And that seems to mean dodgy prose, embarrassment squick, and infestations of Old-School Mary Sues.

(It seems like there's always the brooding alpha who looks like a Hollywood A-Lister but can build her own motor-bikes while singing arias to orphans. Alas, she is unhappy because of nonspecific angst that might involve parents, or an ex, or both. But it's okay - she's going to fall for our plucky questioning femme. Plucky femme may be prone to triggering the reader's secondhand embarrassment squick, but is super feisty and so gorgeous that the alpha will probably have to save her from over-zealous male/butch attention. Then alpha'll get even more broody and cryptic when her collection of campy friends start cheerleading for the two of them because they've nothing better to do with their lives.)

I have in life stumbled across a few wonderful lesbian romances hidden in books that never mentioned them on the blurb. But LGBT rec lists and blogs are not winning for me, alas.

I'm reading A Storm of Swords. I want to have finished the series by the end of the year. Then I want to reread the Dalemark Quartet.

The best book I read in the last year was The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Chabon's style is not for everyone, but it is definitely for me. I still like The Yiddish Policemen's Union better (he's really matured in the narrative structure), but Kavalier & Clay is still pretty damn brilliant. I do wish Rosa got a bit more development though.

I got super into ASOS, then somewhere around the middle lost a lot of interest, but then about 3/4 of the way through it got REALLY good again. I couldn't put it down. I hope you enjoy it.

I really loved Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. Good mix of funny and touching and thought-provoking, at time.

One of my favorites! I read it twice in three months when it first came out (and I was not much of a rereader at the time) and laughed and cried through both readings.

I'm in the middle of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which was assigned as pre-reading for one of my classes this fall. It's not bad in and of itself, but since I've read James Joyce's love letters before, it's a teensy bit awkward and uncomfortable at times.

Before I started on that one, I read Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal at my dad's insistence, and loved the hell out of it. It's the best book I've read all summer, and that's saying something.

Other books I've enjoyed this summer include Soulless, Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess, Libriomancer and Bossypants and two of the Chicks in Chainmail collections, but I can't remember which ones.

The last book I read was 'The Fifth Wave' by Rick Yancey. It was okay- simple and easy to read. It had a mildly interesting plot. Basically, it filled a couple of hours for me.

Herland was a lot better than I expected.

That was months ago. I need to read more.

I don't read nearly as much as I used to because I read so much fanfic these days. I did recently read The Maze Runner, which was slow at first but got so good, and now I can't wait for the movie.

I just finished The True Meaning Of Smekday by Adam Rex for about the fifth time. Aliens called the Boov invade Earth, and after they abduct eleven-year-old Gratuity "Tip" Tucci's mom, Tip decides she's going to drive from Philadelphia to Florida by herself instead of waiting for the Boov to relocate her. On her way she meets J.Lo, a Boovish engineer with problems of his own. Some time after that, things get complicated. One of the funniest books I have ever read, and with a great deal of heart.
