It's not cute, but it IS how old people are. People accept it because you won't make him change, and he'll be dead soon anyway.

While he's alive, however, and acting like a racist old idiot, his grandchildren look at him and are mortified by how he acts. His grandchildren and maybe great grandchildren will look to him as a template for 'how not to behave'.

To a certain degree people like him need to exist to show how stupid the old ways of thinking are.
