The royals are like celebs, larger-than-life people who are gossiped upon in the rags, appear in the news, have rampant speculation about them, have people in the streets waving tiny flags and cheering.. it's a type of fandom for sure.

I've never met one my age, but from what I understand royalty fans are as obsessive as any other real person fandom. There used to be a whole variety of specialty magazines etc. I have no problem with it... and if there is any kind of traditional fandom, you can bet that people have excuses for any kind of shitty behaviour.

I don't think I've ever really seen that. At worst I've seen people say he's a wretched old man who should keep his mouth shut and at best I've seen people view him as if he's that embarrassing old, politically incorrect uncle you see at family reunions who makes you cringe

Old people say racist offensive things. That's a fact of life. So long as they say it but don't do anything about it, I say live and let yourself ignore what they say completely. It is not my place to tell someone four times my age (at least) how they should think or express themselves. It's kind of late to be changing someone's mind when they're in their 80s.

Chiming in to say that I'm not sure how this is fandom.

I do think that sometimes we have to take into account when older people were born. In some cases. But I think even in the 1940s, some of Phillip's comments would be offensive. Easier to get away with, he'd probably be met with a "okay, enough beer for you" and an eye roll, but he'd get away with it easier. And racism's never cute.

I think I would be upset too if 1) He had any real power. At this point, he's more or less The Queen's accessory. 2) He made comments only toward one singled out group.

But his history has shown that he is an equal opportunity snide remark commentator. Black. White. Yellow. Brown. Young. Old. Able bodied. Disabled. Lower Class. High Class. National. Non-National. Woman. Man. He has insulted them all. Most people are shocked when he doesn't make an insult.

It's not cute, but it IS how old people are. People accept it because you won't make him change, and he'll be dead soon anyway.

While he's alive, however, and acting like a racist old idiot, his grandchildren look at him and are mortified by how he acts. His grandchildren and maybe great grandchildren will look to him as a template for 'how not to behave'.

To a certain degree people like him need to exist to show how stupid the old ways of thinking are.

It disgusts me that there are so many people who treat his racism and offensive comments as something "cute" or just "something that old people do".

But it IS "something that old people do". Some of the most radical freethinkers of the 30s would be branded as "-ist" today. Society's views and values change with each generation, steadily moving towards greater acceptance. To expect someone from a generation that is nearly gone to hold the same social beliefs of today's under 30 crowd is unreasonable and unrealistic. There's a huge generation gap between 45 year olds and 20 year olds; it's exponentially greater between 90 year olds and 20 year olds and you cannot bridge it.

I don't really pay that much attention to Prince Philip (from the US here), but I have to say, I really enjoyed his character in The Queen. The whole "That's madness! Bloody madness! The whole thing!" *tosses phone* scene really cracked me up. I still want gifs from that scene...
