I agree but

how is this fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
do you live in the UK

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
no but isn't that mostly relevant for pop culture and media? as opposed to fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
little bit try-hard, this secret.

I live in the UK. A public figure whose remarks are reported in the paper does not constitute a fandom.

Apart from slightly nutty diehard Royalists - a tiny minority - most people, even pro-monarchy people, think he is, at best, an anachronistic bad joke. There is little public affection or respect for him and he is not taken seriously by anyone.

I live in the UK and I don't think it's fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess the royal family have fans, but do they have a FANDOM?

Well, there are fics about them. I've read some naughty William/Harry fics.

RP-fandom is also fandom. If it'd been Princess Diana, no-one would have doubted it. Also Queen Victoria has a fandom, Alexander the Great has a fandom, Jesus has a fandom, Obama has a fandom, I'm participating in Putin-fandom (which has much to do with setting the man straight, or quite the opposite really), etc.

Funny you should mention Lady Di in connection with this thread. They reckon they've found new evidence that the British Establishment was complicit in her death. Apparently Phil's V5 document for his old Fiat Uno turned up.

Putin fandom? Do people make fanart of him fighting bears with his bare hands? Write fanfic of him secretly having gay sex with hot Russian celebrities?

The Putin-fandom: Are you referring to the Putin/Medvedev ship? Because I'm pretty sure my poli-sci prof ships that...

And I'm pretty sure he has a fandom, I mean, he's in a coloring book.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ever heard of royal watchers?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I was also wondering how this is fandom. This is reality. Perhaps reality tv has confused people about the differences between reality and fandom?

The Dowager Countess of Grantham would have been a better pic-choice for this secret, I reckon.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Who?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The crazy old cat lady from Harry Potter, right?

Maggie Smith's character from Downton Abbey.

She's hilarious, because Maggie Smith is a solid gold comic actress HBIC. And 90% of the press about Downton Abbey in the MSM is about how flawless her character's withering one-liners are.

But because she's old and funny, she's also a perfect vector for Fellowes' classist, imperial, racist, apologist ideology. She's a badass old lady who's exempt from change. You laugh with her. You know she's wrong, but she's so damn quotable and you want to be on her team. Except on reflection her team is awful.

The royals are like celebs, larger-than-life people who are gossiped upon in the rags, appear in the news, have rampant speculation about them, have people in the streets waving tiny flags and cheering.. it's a type of fandom for sure.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
But it's not a type of fandom that's within the culture of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
How do you define that? Isn't a culture of fans per definition a fandom? Even on DW the practices vary hugely from fandom to fandom. What is the distinguisher?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
how can a fandom not be 'within the culture of fandom'

I've never met one my age, but from what I understand royalty fans are as obsessive as any other real person fandom. There used to be a whole variety of specialty magazines etc. I have no problem with it... and if there is any kind of traditional fandom, you can bet that people have excuses for any kind of shitty behaviour.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
All this royal fandom talk is reminding me of my grandfather. He had whole shelves of picture books about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Because little old ladies and gents are fantasizing about his royal jewels and sceptre.
