yes it was his decision? but you know, god forbid anyone try to convince their significant other into getting medical treatment so their children won't grow up fatherless. i think it would have been an even bigger dick move if she hadn't cared about him and their family enough to argue.

also i genuinely don't understand walt apologists past season 4. like, are we watching the same show?

***SPOILERS FOR THE CURRENT EPISODE****

You mean the show where Walt offered to turn himself in to protect his family but Skyler said no because she wanted the money he made?

do you really think the dea is going to leave the family alone if walt turns himself in without handing over the money?

Or because Skyler knows that she's an accessory to his crimes and she could go down for it or lose her kids?

Plus she's been going through hell for the past year or more and it'll all have been for nothing if they lose the money.

So from her POV her best game plan is to wait for Walt to die and then she'll be home free with her kids and the money.

As far as Hank knows she was just forced/coerced into it. Given that he personally could attest that she was under extreme stress to the point of drowning herself, I can't imagine that he wouldn't believe her.

Yeah, but who knows if the DA would be so keen to let Skyler off. Hank isn't in charge of that.

Right now Hank has a one track mind. He's focused on getting Walt. Skyler might end up being collateral damage.

It was shady as HELL that he didn't want a lawyer there. Skyler isn't stupid. She wanted a lawyer there to protect herself. I think that first and foremost, she doesn't want to lose her kids. And then additionally she'd like to keep the money too because well, she's been going through hell because of Walt and it'd suck if it was all for nothing. If they lose the money and the car wash, she is completely screwed financially. So I can see how the money is tempting to her.

That might not matter. It'd be up to the DA. Even if she didn't end up in jail that would a horrible ordeal to put family through.

It's not about the money for her. Sure, it's a nice perk, but no. It's about keeping her family in tact and not completely ruined. It's why she couldn't just leave (because Walt Jr. would never forgive her and likely wouldn't believe that his father was a murderer and a drug lord), it's why she couldn't turn in Walt (because that'd ruin her immediate family as well as Hank), and it's why she's standing by Walt now (because she's in deep and she ain't getting out of this unscathed even if she does turn herself in).

If Marie wouldn't have tried to take Holly, I think things might have turned bit differently. She might have turned on Walt if she felt Hank and Marie were on her side, but Hank is rattled and out for vengeance and now Marie is too (after she realized Skyler knew that Walt was possibly the cause of her husband's near-death) so Skyler can't count on their protection. But when Marie tried to walk out with her baby, that indicated to Skyler that her family would not be safe if she told them anything, because that anything makes her an accessory to a lot of bad shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Already way to late at that point for Skyler to get clear of that legal shit storm.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
you mean the part where Skyler knew that if he turned himself in, she would not only lose all the money, but it would become clear to the cops that she covered his ass, laundered his money, and was therefore an accessory to his crimes THEREFORE she'd lose her kids, go to jail, lose the car wash and (I believe) the house because they were paid for with dirty money, never be able to get a job in her field again (she's a BOOKKEEPER ffs) and be under scrutiny by the cops for the rest of her life?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You can have a reasoned discussion about it, but what Skyler did was guilt-tripping and didn't address the fact that Walter should have the last say on whether or not he wants to undergo a long, painful cancer treatment with a low chance of survival and bankrupt his family in the process. I'm not saying that Walter's a saint or a better person than Skyler, but even bad people should have the right to make their own healthcare decisions.

Exactly this. And I do not think you can blame people for this having rubbed them the wrong way, and given a bad impression of her character early on. I mean, in a show where you basically know it's a show about criminals, there's certain tropes you expect. But often the interpersonal relationships make them interesting people, or make you wonder if they can be redeemed. However, Skyler really feels like a toxic person in her interpersonal relationships. Regardless of what kind of person Walter is, I still think she's a horrible wife and partner.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I wouldn't go so far as to say horrible.

I mean, you've got to take into account the type of people in the relationship with her.

[personal profile] deaalmon 2013-08-23 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Just cause she doesn't win the award for worst person in the relationship doesn't mean that she's not horrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't make Skyler a horrible, irredeemable bitch worthy of hate, which is what many in this thread are asserting. It makes her a complex person that closely resembles a real human, which is what the show is about, I thought.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
he did have the last say though. Watch the scene again. She tried to convince him to go through chemo and then he made that speech about how he wanted to LIVE before he died (and I cried) then the next morning he woke up, went downstairs and kissed her and said he'd get the treatment anyway. (and I cried again.)

she wanted him to do what she wanted him to do, yeah. But she DIDN'T try and ~take the decision away~ from him, it was a discussion. And when he made that speech, she didn't push. He changed his mind on his own.

Thank you.
