Bonus Walter fail: not taking the money that is being freely offered to him out of a stupid, misplaced sense of pride.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
+1, seriously. Cooking meth to earn money is already a terrible life decision but he had a GET MONEY FREE card and the only reason he passed it up is because he can't get over his own ego.

Ugh whenever someone defends him as trying to do the best for his family, not leave them in debt, stress them out, etc., etc. all I can think is if he loved his damn family so much why didn't he swallow his pride and take the money from his ex. That tells me this wasn't some slippery slope any of us could end up just like him if pushed that far!! thing, he started out exactly who he ended up as. His family has never meant more to him than his own wants and ego.

Then asking the ex to lie for him and say he took the money. So many things wrong with that. Like: What happened to that self-obsessed pride, huh?

He was offered FREE money. Someone was going to pay for all of his treatments. He lied about it to her and sold meth.

OMG, I literally wanted to post the same secret (though I guess I won't be now). Yes, yes, a million times yes.

I hate the whole fandom thing where "OMG if you hate Skylar you're a misogynist".

No, I hate Skylar because she acts in horrible, manipulative ways. I'd hate her if she was a he, too.

It was especially horrible to me, because my dad had just discovered he had cancer for a second time around the time I saw the first season, and there was a genuine possibility that if the doctors said chances were bad, he'd refuse treatment. And that would have been HIS choice, no matter how much it would have pained us. The way it was handled in Breaking Bad just made my skin crawl.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that Skyler is kind of a shitty person; the problem is where that turns into valorizing Walt, who is much worse.

I felt the same way, too. I've had relatives diagnosed with cancer, and what treatment they wanted to have was-- and SHOULD be-- up to them. They're the ones who have to suffer through chemo and radiation, so how is it any of my business if they decide they just don't want to? I was kinda surprised that this issue doesn't come up more often in the fandom.

not in the fandom but

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
For me that attitude of the fandom bothers me because, welp think of it this way a character is being considered un-critcizeable because they're a woman.

Isn't that well kind of sexist in it's own way?

I dislike the idea that being a woman makes any criticism of a character "just bashing by those gross misogynists".

Also it gets a step closer to another sentiment I've seen that a woman can't face the consequences of their own actions that would misogyny" (*nods at the secret AAAAAAAAAAAAGES ago about how "calling Regina from Once Upon a Time a rapist is so groooooss and a sign of misogyny"*)

A character is not above criticism for being a woman. Now if the criticism is misogynistic in nature or the critic doesn't hold a man to the same standard THEN it's misogyny. If the "criticism" turns into creepy sexist bashing THEN it's misogyny.

But just disliking or criticizing a character who happens to be female...no.

[Picture is the actress Anna Gunn playing Skyler White from the TV show "Breaking Bad". She is a woman with light olive skin and medium-length blonde hair barely touching her shoulders. She is wearing a dark blouse or shirt and looking serious.]

I started disliking her the moment she badgered Walter into chemo treatments instead of letting him make his own healthcare decisions.

Bonus Skyler fail: Getting mad when your husband commits crazy crimes so he can afford the treatments you forced him to undergo in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my main reasons for watching this last season is because I hope she is one of the characters they kill off. I have hated her since the beginning. She has done nothing but nag and whine through the whole series. Granted Walter dun messed up by selling meth but she was a horrible wife from the first episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 12:11 am (UTC)(link)

yes it was his decision? but you know, god forbid anyone try to convince their significant other into getting medical treatment so their children won't grow up fatherless. i think it would have been an even bigger dick move if she hadn't cared about him and their family enough to argue.

also i genuinely don't understand walt apologists past season 4. like, are we watching the same show?

I like Skyler, probably because I've felt sorry for her ever since the scene where she told Jesse to stop selling weed to her husband. She was trying to protect her family, but was completely ignorant and misguided.

SPOILERS for recent episodes

And in the last episode Saul and Walt assumed she would make a deal with Hank and she didn't. Protecting herself, yes, but that was also her best shot at getting a deal.

*rubs hands together*

ALRIGHT! Yeah, here we go, motherfuckers, this is a good one. Did you take my advice last week and come up with this legit criticism? Because I'm liking this.

Okay, here's the deal, though: Is it really that much of a crime to love someone and want them to do something that may help them live rather just just waiting for them to die? No. The answer is no. Walt wanted to live, he just needed his family to remind him that it was more cruel to just die than save them money.

I didn't mind the concept of an intervention.
But I did start massively getting annoyed / disgusted with her when she started trying to control her sister's opinion on the matter, instead of respecting it, and starting a giant fight over who is allowed to think what.

Skylar just seems really, really controlling.
Sometimes it's justified. A lot of other times, it can easily seem abusive.
If she was a guy, I think people would be a lot more disturbed by how forceful she comes off.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you remember that part very well at all (to be fair, it was 6 years ago) but

1. She didn't badger him into getting treatment. she forced him to DISCUSS the possibility. and then when he made that heartbreaking speech about why he didn't want it, she didn't push it. The next morning he said he'd get it anyway

and 2. nice try, but Walt started cooking meth in the first episode and the intervention wasn't until the 4th or 5th. He never even considered chemo until then. He didn't even tell his wife he was fucking diagnosed until she started catching on to the fact that he was clearly hiding something, and he didn't wanna tell her about the meth so he told her about the cancer. He started cooking because he planned to die and leave that money behind for them - but we can't even know that for sure anymore, because we now know that Walt is a bitter and proud man and when a person like that gets that kind of news it is not unheard-of for them to snap completely and decide they're just not gonna play by the rules anymore.

Yea, it made me not like her, too. Probably mostly because it's happened in my family, but "realism" doesn't make the fact that she bullied him into long, grievously painful, humiliating medical interventions any better.
