I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that Skyler is kind of a shitty person; the problem is where that turns into valorizing Walt, who is much worse.

I think that's sort of happens because Walt is written as the guy you're supposed to sympathize with. Personally I've only seen the first season, and I pretty much think they're all horrible people. The only one I don't want to punch in the face perpetually is his son. I can stand Walter, because at least it's interesting, even though he's an asshole. I want to watch more of the show, but I have a love-hate relationship with it, because I just cringe when any of the side characters get screen time.

To be fair Walter does become a much worse person as the show goes on, although a lot of it he's effectively forced into until after a certain point.

That being said I agree that saying anyone who dislikes Skyler is a misogynist is overtly politically correct bullshit. It's like The Walking Dead fans who say people who dislike Michonne are racists. Fuck off.

I thought he was hideous to start with. I mean, you're a teacher who's probably watched kids/their families destroy themselves with drugs, and so you decide to make more of them. I was pretty much 'K buddy fuck you and this show' before I got through the first ep.

Wellll, not so much anymore. Last season even the creator said that he "lost all sympathy" for Walt and that he's basically reaching full on villain status.

I haven't seen the last season, but just because someone is written as a villain does not mean he can't also be written in a way that wants you to sympathize with him in some way.

Examples: Dexter is serial killer, even though one with a moral code, and he's written so you sympathize with him. So is Hannibal. So are several charterers in Boardwalk Empire, or The Sopranos, or the protagonists in GTA.

They are all villains, no matter how you twist or turn it - but through writing style they can become relatable characters. That's sort of the difference between fiction and reality: it's quite possible to root for a great bad guy in fiction.

No shit Sherlock. But Harris didn't write him sympathetically until Hannibal, which was actually came out in 1999. He wasn't at all sympathetic in Red Dragon and he only appeared in that for ten pages.

Walt is only that way in the beginning of the show. The creator has stated that, while initially Walt is the hero, and sympathetic, eventually he just flat-out becomes a villain that you're supposed to be questioning whether or not you should root for.

So at this point, no, Walter is not a sympathetic character.

Meh, it's no different than the old lady who walked up to the guy playing the FBI agent on the Sopranos and told him to leave Tony Soprano alone (yes, this actually happened). Walt's the lead protagonist, the antihero, Skyler is the moral foil. Even if she's the "better" person it's still possible to root for Walt over her without being a mouthbreathing neckbeard.

But the kind of hate Skyler gets thrown at her is pretty explicitly misogynistic.

Yeah the crazy thing about this show...I do not like nor sympathize with anyone. Any shred of sentiment I had for Walt died with that fucking plant. I hate Skyler but not because of Walt, I hate Walt...and Skyler is trying but she just keeps fucking stuff up.
