Ugh whenever someone defends him as trying to do the best for his family, not leave them in debt, stress them out, etc., etc. all I can think is if he loved his damn family so much why didn't he swallow his pride and take the money from his ex. That tells me this wasn't some slippery slope any of us could end up just like him if pushed that far!! thing, he started out exactly who he ended up as. His family has never meant more to him than his own wants and ego.

YEP. Walt is completely on a power trip and has been since he turned down that money.

Just a question: I've only watched (part of) the first season, but everyone keeps mentioning how he's now unsympathetic for not accepting money from his ex, but didn't he turn down a job from one of his former best friends in the first season as well? How was the turning down money from his ex worse than that? Genuinely curious.

I haven't watched in a while but wasn't the job offer from his ex's husband who was their friend and colleague while him and the ex were together? The guy he felt became unfairly more successful than him? I'm pretty sure the guy offered the money after the job offer was refused and his wife/Walt's ex tried to convince him to change his mind?

In any case I still would have thought it was stupid and wasteful not to accept the job offer over pride and directly contradicting the motive of protecting the family if the ex's money wasn't in play. But still... turning down a no-strings offer to pay for the chemo over pride is a little more in-your-face selfish than turning down accepting a job offer that would require a career change while battling an illness from someone you dislike/distrust.
