New Orleans Information

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hi F!S i am currently writing a story about a restaurant that's set in New Orleans. I'm Australian and have never been to New Orleans.

Now, I have googled stuff about the place, but knowing basic information about a place isn't the same as actually BEING there. For example, my hometown has its own culture and atmosphere and little things that set it apart from other towns, that you wouldn't notice unless you've been there a while.

I have neither the time nor the money to travel (one day!) so I turn to you, F!S

Have any of you ever been to New Orleans? Do any of you actually live there? What is it like - what's the culture like, how does the history impact the present day? What were your impressions of the place? The food? The people?

Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't get help here (sorry; I'm from the midwest), you can check out [livejournal.com profile] littledetails. They always get a big audience.

Nah, I tried to do advanced coding and linked it wrong- I accidentally linked to a personal journal instead of the community. Shortysc22 has the right link. It's still up and running.

I visited there a long time ago. I didn't like it so my story will be colored by that.

What I learned visiting the city, it's one big Frat House. It wants to be sex and booze like Vegas but Vegas is fun. It knows how to balance sex and booze so that it doesn't trample over to down in the gutters sleaze-ville. New Orleans doesn't. Or to put it another way, if Vegas is Brigitte Bardot then New Orleans would be Lindsey Lohan. (Drunk, of course.) It is not safe at night for women to walk alone because the streets are filled with drunk men and women who think that because they are in New Orleans, it's a free for all to grope. (Yes, women are just as handsy.)

The whole Goth Paradise is just a tourist trap thing. Every other street has some voodoo shop/museum waiting to milk tourists out of their money for a reading. Expect to find twenty-five dollar "Lucky" and "Love" candles "guaranteed" to help you in your life. *wink*wink*.

There's also a big teen homeless punk culture there. They squat on the streets, begging for money. The cops usually ignore them because they always have bigger fish to fry.

The one good thing it has going for it is the food. Not the cheapest, though. You are more likely to find cheap good eats in NYC, believe it or not. But, none the less, you will be hard pressed to find a bad meal there.

I did read some sociological articles about the crime and social problems in New Orleans. (I'm dying at the Lindsay Lohan comparison!)

The way you describe it kinda reminds me of the Gold Coast in Australia - it's a big hotspot for tourists, sort of Australia's mini "Las Vegas", but there's also a 'frat boy' drinking culture that's making it less and less family friendly. And unfortunately it doesn't have amazing food to make up for it.

(Whenever we holiday up that end we skip the Gold Coast entirely and go to more quiet, lesser-known beach spots.)

DA

Just want to put out there - since I both know people who regularly go into N.O. for non-drink/party stuff, and have family there - there *are* parts that aren't so effected by the frat boy culture. They aren't terribly obvious, and N.O. does have a lot of crime problems [at least, that's what they've all said - I haven't really been there recently enough to say].

I don't know how much this will really help you any but...there are still a lot parts that are effected by what happened with Katrina. How much and where you'd need to look up, but last I heard there were still entire areas that hadn't been rebuilt.
