Err the orginal Hetalia didn't take itself seriously either.

I haven't seen or read Hetalia in ages but I got put off by the dub due to the stupid Jew jokes (that didn't even make sense!) and the annoying accents. It's a bunch of not very good voice actors (good American voice actors tend to work for western animation, so it was never going to be good) failing to do an accent. The ad-libbing sucks too.

But each to their own I guess! Plenty of other people do seem to like it so I don't think you are that alone.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to disagree with you, but as a German I think Patrick Seitz did a very good job on the accent. I even thought he actually WAS a German when I watched the dub for the first time.
Sure, it is over the top. But I know people who talk "leik zat". That's why dub!Germany is more amusing to me X)

>Err the orginal Hetalia didn't take itself seriously either. <

The FUNimation dub often changed the dialogue to be even MORE whacky. At least this is how I interpret OP's line.
I remember the Christmas episode where in the original the narrator just said "French Christmas, American Christmas, etc" while in the dub she says "gay Christmas, fat Christmas, etc"

So in that case Vic Mignogna will never do western animation...

And decent anime voice actors (Scott McNeil, Steve Blum) don't stay anime voice actors

[Picture is a screen-capture of the anime "Hetalia". It shows two men standing next to each other. The man on the right, who has short blond hair, light skin and a blue military uniform is whispering into the ear of the man on the left, who has short brown hair, light skin, a dark shirt and a blue tie. The second man has his mouth open.]

I understand why someone would dislike Hetalia's English dub. There are some really creepy Jew 'jokes' and pandering to the Western fans.

However, I love both the original and the English dub equally. I love the accents, I love dudebro!America and foppish Austria. I think the voice actors did a great job. I like that I'm able to switch to a more light-hearted version of Hetalia that doesn't take itself too seriously and has no qualms to do even more shipteasing than the original. Apparently I should feel bad for this.

Bonus secret: I hope they'll royally fuck with 'Buon San Valentino'. Just to piss off the purists. *is horrible*

For the record, the blond man is Germany and the brunet is Italy.

Thank you! I keep consulting charts and stuff, but nope, still can't identify two random given Hetalia characters! orz

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
More specifically, the brown-haired guy is North Italy! (There are two characters representing Italy; North and South.)

Ah, thanks, anon!

I really wish people would stop fucking crucifying other fans for liking the dub. It's. Just a silly crack dub with bad accents. Honestly the anime was terrible in the first place until season 5 when they fixed the art (it seems they also fixed the comedic timing).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.
And for just being a crack dub they sure poured a lot of devotion into it. The DVDs have fun audio commentaries, the VAs say every shit you want them to say when you catch them at cons and also there's this:

Indeed. I think the worst part is that some disgusting excuses for human beings sent Charlene Ingram (the brand manager for Hetalia; she works at Viz now though) death threats over the dub. Fucking death threats. And there was a bunch of claiming she wasn't a "real fan" and was just an "outsider" fucking up their precious show. Uh. The majority of people who work at anime companies, with the exception of voice actors, are actual anime fans. And Charlene Ingram was actually a fan of Hetalia before she was given the project to work on. Which is probably why she poured so much work into it. Also I've met her in person and she's super sweet. So I'd like to line up every single asshole who sent her, or anyone else at FUNimation, a death threat and punch them all in the face.

ayrt

I didn't know about that. Okay, that's seriously fucked up but sadly also what I would have expected from the rabid part of Hetalia fandom.
Luckily everything cooled down a little since Hetalia's Western fandom peek.

Oh man, I totally didn't think about how (if? when?) they dub season 5 they'll do Buon San Valentino... I am imagining it now, and it is hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
OP I think you might secretly be me. Apart form the awkward Jew jokes, I find the dub's completely irreverent (well, more irreverent than the original at any rate) approach really funny, and I like the accents. (Trying to imagine the characters without their accents is kinda hard for me to pull off now...)

I'm looking forward to the dub of Buon San Valentino too, but a tiny part of me is worried that they'll downplay or completely screw up the none-too-subtle Germany x Italy shiptease. >_>

The original Hetalia isn't light-hearted? Um... okay.

Dudebro America hurts my soul. :(

(The anime is pretty shitty even in the original though. It's just a badly done adaptation.)

+1

I'm a fan of the original comic strips. The anime ... just isn't a good adaptation, and it leaves a lot out.

For me, the dub took the offensiveness way too far, and changed the characterization of many characters way too much for me to enjoy it, particularly America. And they did it deliberately in the name of being "edgy." Those of us who don't like the dub have good reason not to.

[personal profile] iggy 2013-08-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sure absolutely. Nothing wrong with liking the dub, but it takes what I enjoy about the series and pretty much removes it. Seeing my favorite characters afforded a completely different personality isn't something I enjoy. And speaking of America, I was so happy with Hetalia and fell in love with his character because he WASN'T portrayed how I expected him to be. He's actually a really lovable guy. But the dub? Portrays him exactly how I was worried he'd be when I first found out about the series.

And the offensive jokes are just nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"MORE light-hearted" =/= "the original isn't light-hearted".

"doesn't take itself too seriously" is the wording on the secret.

That being said the original is more light-hearted than the dub. The dub has a hard-edged, satirical humor, whereas the original is sweeter and fluffier. So yeah, definitely more light-hearted.

Every time I see a typo in a secret, I think it must have been written by the OP who wrote the secret about adding spelling mistakes in their secrets on purpose "to avoid being recognized".
Considering most secrets don't have spelling mistakes, it's not working.

Also I hope the typo was really a typo and not made on purpose because that would annoy the hell out of me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How anal can you get? Sometimes people accidentally make typos and that's it.
What are you even referring to? That one word hsa tow letetrs switchde?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind Hetalia until the crisis here in the EU got so bad. Now it's just depressing.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Do you want Hetalia to be realistic and all countries should just fight with each other all the time? Use it as an escape fantasy, because that's what it is.
