Well, tbh he was a villain, but a redeemed one.

[Picture is Ben Linus, as portrayed by the actor Michael Emerson, from the TV show "Lost". He is a man with light skin and short brown hair, with a tall forehead and gray eyes. He looks worried and is wearing a white shirt and a dark suit jacket.]

Everyone kept on telling me that Ben was a villain, so I felt vindicated when he ended up being a hero at the end.

Villains don't stop being villains by not kicking puppies, c'mon.

Well, he did do a lot of really bad things and played that kind of role in the story for a while, but I never bought him as the terrifying psychopath a lot of people saw him as or wanted him to be. As much as I hated the sideways and that shit on the bench and arrrgghh Lost, I felt vindicated myself that they seemed to be saying it was much more about nurture than nature with him, and I really loved the on-Island part of his redemption arc. There was no real reason for the Others to do like 90% of what they did, so I see them as a freaky death cult and write about that part of his backstory in my fic accordingly.

I never saw him as a villain because with the exception of killing Locke which came out of personal jealousy most of his actions were means to an end in serving Jacob or protecting the island.

does that include the Purge?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, given that Richard Alpert and the rest were doing it with him.

I would have to disagree, I would say Ben was an antagonist until nearly the very end. He was incredibly manipulative (Especially Juliet, he controlled her and killed a man (had him killed?) she loved because "You're MINE") And attempted to have some of the main 815's group shot (season 3 finale?? he ordered them to be shot but luckily the others did not follow him that time) Not to mention the Purge?

I haven't watched the show in years, but I would have to say that Ben is an antagonist through and through. I wouldn't say one good thing in the end (Which honestly I can't remember what it was that he did?) makes up for any of his past actions. I definitely wouldn't say he became a Hero.

That being said, I love Ben as a character and his arch in incredibly interesting.

Okay? My opinion still stands.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. It's kind of hard to take your opinion seriously when you say yourself that you barely remember the canon, but you have fun with that.

But even the wiki page I was linked to says: "He remained, however, an expert manipulator, a liar and a murderer, and he served as a main villain for much of the series."

Being a villain for much of the series isn't the same as being "an antagonist through and through." He had a very clear redemption arc, so it wasn't just one thing he did at the end, like you said. You're oversimplifying because you don't remember much of what happened.

I liked Ben, too, OP. I thought he was fascinating.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. He was the most fascinating character I can think of on TV. I wouldn't necessarily say he was a "hero" in the end, but he was definitely trying to do the right thing. I love that he and Hurley, one of the most kind-hearted and caring individuals on the show, were the ones who were meant to work together in the end. It was spectacular.

They were dead all along

[personal profile] anonlulz 2013-08-23 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. You've saved me from having to watch 6? seasons of a show!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They weren't, actually.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think he WAS a villain who had a great arc and became a hero

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love him.

Blimey, you clearly weren't in the LJ Lost fandom.
