What are we called? The Granadiers? The Brettanites?

Until a couple of years ago, we were called Sherlockians and eligible for inclusion in Sherlockian societies even if we didn't care about ACD's canon. Now a lot of the societies are excluding all mention of adaptations because it's considered immoral to only exclude BBC Sherlock fans even though some of them specify that show is the reason for the clause.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hang on. Does that mean if you're a fan of Sherlock, you can't join in even if you were a fan of the canon or another adaptation first? Heck, I don't think should matter if you loved Sherlock first and then explored everything else. If you've read the canon and love it that should be enough.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It means no mentions of BBC's Sherlock or any other adaptation. All discussions and events are now limited to the canon. What you loved first or most is irrelevant. There are rumours of some that don't allow fans of BBC's Sherlock in at all, even if they're also fans of the canon. But those are just rumours and if they exist, they keep quiet about it. None of the major ones are like that.

My god, that is fucking stupid.

I hate people.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you don't know fandom elitism until you look at the Sherlockian societies. I used to be involved in one, and it bothered me even then. I got tossed out upon my admission that I also enjoy the BBC adaptation and suggested that we be allowed to speak about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And that is not in any way the more rabid BBC fans' fault? Yeah, right. But of course they have to muscle in on a happy Brett celebration to whine about how OMGpersecuted they are.

SIGH

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes. That escalated quickly. I bailed when the fandom went from "crazy fun" to "plain crazy" personally.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
What, mainstream Holmesian (as we say in the UK) fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I never knew there were Sherlockian societies. Huh. Oh well, on the plus side maybe the exclusionary part means all the intolerant, stuck-up, ACD-only jerks will congregate there and let fans of the BBC/RDJ/Elementary/Gaiman/Other adaptations talk about their versions in peace on their sites without any holier-than-thou finger-waving about 'canon' and 'literary purity' and such.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
If you 'don't care' about the source material (which is the basis for the societies)I don't see why you *should* be included. Liking adaptations *as well* is another matter.
