Lyrics matter. If they don't, then they shouldn't be included.

Instrumentation and lyrics can be evaluated separately. It's possible and perfectly valid to say, "I like the melody of this song, but I dislike the lyrics."

But, even then, lyrics can both add to a song and take away from it. Lyrics are written in order to evoke a certain feeling, just as the rest of a piece is. To deny their influence is to deny that they are a part of songwriting -- which, again, if they're not, then they shouldn't exist to begin with.

Here's my question to you, in order to get you to think about this: do you think that it's acceptable to play Uncle Cracker's "Follow Me" at weddings because it has a nice melody, despite the fact that the lyrics encourage and justify infidelity?

Not really relevant, but I loved that song when it came out and apparently managed to learn only the first verse and the chorus, so had no idea it was about infidelity until now.
