I strongly agree with this secret. And I feel the same way about people who dismiss excellent bands just because they don't like their lyrics. If you're so hung up on lyrics that they keep you from appreciating the actual music, you probably don't like music very much to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
But lyrics are a part of the music. For a good song they don't write the music and then make up the lyrics to fit. If it's a good, well crafted song the lyrics and the music are developed together and are written to compliment each other.

I do it, but then I don't claim to be a connoisseur of this particular form of art. As a matter of fact, I'm quite tone-deaf. Music just sets me in the right mood sometimes, especially when I need to do something. Also, I like listening to songs that are related to some historically significant events or groups of people.

This being said, I find your sentiment nonplussing. If somebody is unable to write good lyrics, I say don't write them. When they're already a part of the song, they get judged the way any other part would be.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hold up - since when are lyrics not part of "actual" music.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Since anon decided it wasn't.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, tho

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to listen to bad music if the instruments and songwriting are better than the vocal part. Also, singing is music???

Woah. If lyrics and voice don't matter, then musicians shouldn't even write songs from your logics. They should stick with instrumental. Which they don't, because, you know, that's a different beast from songs.

Different means, different aims.
And maybe different audiences.

Gods forbid someone enjoys a medium for other reasons than you.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
uh. not that I don't have exceptions, but I find lyrics INCREDIBLY fucking important. the lyrics are the message of the song, the POINT of it. sorry but that's actually pretty damned important and if you don't get why i really do not know how to explain it better than that. seriously wtf.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I agree with everyone saying "Lyrics are important"

but

by this point it seems like you're all being dog pilling assholes. Knock it off.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe people have a right to express their opinions? And maybe you should knock it off?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. This is a discussion, and if someone doesn't want people to react to their opinions, they shouldn't post them. This goes double if their opinions are shitty or obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
They're hardly being dog piling assholes. I could understand if people were being excessively rude to the commenter, but they're not. Most people are just politely disagreeing with the commenter's assertion that lyrics aren't a part of music, or explaining why lyrics are an important part of the the music. Which certainly doesn't amount to dog piling.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Lol what?

So, only a certain number of people can express a negative opinion on something?

Or is it that you're the person who originally made the comment, and you see the point that everyone is getting at, but instead of being an adult and saying, "okay, I see your point," you're trying to make everyone feel bad about the fact that they've made you think uncomfortable thoughts?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
nah

you made your bed

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
If lyrics are not part of the ~actual music, then they shouldn't be included in the first place. If you don't want words, go listen to classical instrumental music. But when there are words, they are part of the point of the piece, part of the music, and dismissing them as ancillary or irrelevant is pretty musically illiterate, actually

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
No.

Lyrics matter. If they don't, then they shouldn't be included.

Instrumentation and lyrics can be evaluated separately. It's possible and perfectly valid to say, "I like the melody of this song, but I dislike the lyrics."

But, even then, lyrics can both add to a song and take away from it. Lyrics are written in order to evoke a certain feeling, just as the rest of a piece is. To deny their influence is to deny that they are a part of songwriting -- which, again, if they're not, then they shouldn't exist to begin with.

Here's my question to you, in order to get you to think about this: do you think that it's acceptable to play Uncle Cracker's "Follow Me" at weddings because it has a nice melody, despite the fact that the lyrics encourage and justify infidelity?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not really relevant, but I loved that song when it came out and apparently managed to learn only the first verse and the chorus, so had no idea it was about infidelity until now.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can enjoy the sound of the lyrics without necessarily understanding them, though I usually look up a translation in the end.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well arent you a special little idiot

You have no idea about what real music is

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Re: this entire thread.

If the lyrics are so utterly important, why does anyone bother listening to Carmina Burana? Few people understand the words.

Do you really not appreciate music for the melody or the rhythm? Why not just read poetry instead if the lyrics are what make it for you?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The point is that the whole makes it, neither the music nor the lyrics alone.

Furthermore, lyrics have more function than just their meaning as well (compare someone mumbling through something from the Adiemus project versus clearly using the actual sounds Jenkins made up for it).

As for the Carmina Burana - I don't know about live performances, but most CDs come with translations, no? Plus, part of the lyrics at least will be familiar to anyone speaking a language that developed in a Roman-occupied territory.
