I listen to music in other languages, but I can understand why someone wouldn't. Some people really take a lot out of lyrics, so not understanding what the singer is speaking could take something away from that (yes I know you could probably find translations, but translations can take away from the poetry of lyrics.)

I strongly agree with this secret. And I feel the same way about people who dismiss excellent bands just because they don't like their lyrics. If you're so hung up on lyrics that they keep you from appreciating the actual music, you probably don't like music very much to begin with.

I listen to music in several languages but I can see why other people might not. Wanting to understand the lyrics of whatever you're listening to is a valid criteria for picking music (I have recently found a mix of metal ballads that I used to listen to when I was younger and didn't know English as well as I do now and holy shit, it had some pretty gross and/or stupid lyrics; and I can't count the times I looked up lyrics to a song I liked but couldn't understand and found them utterly insipid). And like it or not, languages flow differently and listening to one won't appeal to everyone. Not to mention.. did you actually ask people why is it exactly they are giving your favorite bands a pass and get 'language' in response? Maybe they just dislike the sound of them and would be open to listening to other genres of Finnish music, e.g. pop or folk, or even other Finnish metal bands. Some artists just don't click with you.

I LOVE music in other languages! Though I hate finding too-obscure stuff I can't find a translation for. Because I love reading lyrics and understanding them and if I can't understand them then it bugs me (even if I know the song is in English, if the singer mumbles and I can't find the lyrics then the song will still bug me)
but yes with translations? some of my favorite music isn't in english

On the one hand, I want to agree with you. Dismissing everything because, language! sounds stupid.
On the other hand, I know that I dislike not understanding lyrics, and the idea that the song could be obscene/heinous/something I actually disapprove of/awfully stupid, without my knowing really bothers me. If only everything came with a translation...

The problem often is, when you don't speak the language, it's difficult to get even a beginner's grasp of what's out there and where to start. If I discover a musical tradition, or a band from another country, it's often down to serendipity... e.g. someone like you points me to a specific performer or piece of music.

Also, it's unrealistic to expect anyone to be familiar with all music in all languages. I listen to and enjoy music from Ireland, Japan, Georgia, Mongolia, Spain. Maybe I'll get around to Finland eventually :-)

i hate how my language usually sounds in the sort of music i like, so it was either listening to music in other languages or be forever doomed to listen to mostly crappy music by our current media monopoly and keep searching on the side for indie stuff that appealed to me

but really, lyrical meaning is one more layer of cool, sure, but you can totally enjoy music if you consider the human voice to be just one more instrument and just listen to the sounds

I like foreign language music (a variety of Asian pop music for me) to be excellent for when I'm writing or working on art because the lyrics aren't distracting, but it's a different type of sound than classical. But it's a different experience than listening to something where you CAN get the words, just like it's different listening to lyric-less music.

I actually prefer it when lyrics aren't in English. That way, if they're stupid I can ignore it and just enjoy the music and singing. In English songs, if I hate the lyrics it will put me off the whole song.

And some other languages just sound nice. Finnish is usually one that does, so maybe I'll look up the stuff in the secret.

Ugh, music elitism. You are not better or more interesting or more open-minded just for listening to non-English music. You just have different taste in music than other people you know. I'm sorry if your friends don't like your faves - I totally get how frustrating it is to love something and fail to get other people to love it too - but people are drawn to music for different reasons, and if what people like best about music is the lyrics, then it doesn't make them dullards if they prefer to listen to music that has lyrics in whatever language they understand.

PS - I gave the song in your secret a chance, but I didn't like it, sorry! I like Finnish, but the genre wasn't my cup of tea. Perhaps that's another factor for people you know, beyond just language?

My mother language is not English, and I've found that music in other languages that aren't English are really hard to come by. Imo media makes a song or a band popular. I never heard of Poets of the Fall before Allan Wake, and while I wasn't fascinated by the game, the songs really blew me away.

I would agree, but I know some people almost solely listen to music for the lyrics. If you ever look up a translation and follow along, you might be surprised how well your mind retains the general meaning of the lyrics, though.

That's assuming of course that this is about English speakers wanting to understand the lyrics and not just some assumption that music that's in English tends to be better, which would be pretty close-minded.

anon, I like music in different languages but that's because I tend to like the sound of music more than the meaning of the lyrics. If you primarily enjoy the meaning of the lyrics then obviously songs that you can't understand will hold less appeal. There's room for everyone, anon!

That being said, if someone won't even listen to a song once then I do find that odd. Even if you don't think you'll like it it never hurts to have one listen.
