FWIW, I enjoy listening to music in other languages, but it had BETTER have a FANTASTIC melody and skill level to the music itself. I have no interest in listening to recycled beats and melodies simply because they're in other languages and you like them and will be UPSET if I don't listen to them. I came home from studying abroad with loads of music from the country where I lived, and tried to play it for my friends and family. Some liked it, some didn't, mostly because they didn't understand the lyrics to like it as much as I did. Some refused to listen to it, because they knew they wouldn't understand the lyrics. What was my reaction? "Oh, okay, no worries, just thought you might like it!"

And really? That song you used for your secret? Was not groundbreaking. Not enough for me to have suffered through an entire screaming music video of it.

"Some refused to listen to it, because they knew they wouldn't understand the lyrics."

And that doesn't strike you as utterly fucking bizarre??

No? I don't care what language something is in, but I don't like certain genres. If someone tries to get me to listen to something from a genre I know I won't like, what's bizarre about refusing to listen to it?

Since when is "not English" a genre?

Sorry, I didn't meant that "not English" was a genre. Of course it's not. I just meant that I think the situations of someone who doesn't like non-English music and someone who doesn't like, say, heavy metal are comparable.

I think it's not so much about being not-English specifically as "not a language I understand." As has been noted many, many times in these comments, some people find lyrics really important. Even if they also like instrumental music-- if there is a voice, they like to know what it's saying. That goes for people who speak English, French, Russian, Georgian, etc. It's not that "not English" is a genre. But it's that "not in a language I speak" is a group of music that you can very easily just not enjoy.

(And this is speaking as someone who listens to plenty of music in a variety of languages, but very strongly prefers music in Russian, English, or Polish-- languages I can understand.)

DA. No. Because, shock/horror, people have different reasons for doing things than you do. Deal with it.

I love world music. My son likes lyrics he can understand without a crib. We both love music. The end.

Why is this such a difficult concept for people like you to grasp?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it really doesn't. Why would it be bizarre to not want to listen to something because they know they won't understand the lyrics? Maybe lyrics are important to them?

Like, you could make the most delicious dish in the world using beef, but maybe the person you offer this dish to doesn't eat meat and turns it down without looking at it or smelling it? Would you think those people are close minded and dull?

It's called "preference". People have them.
