For bentos, start off simply just to see if you'll like it. Resist the urge to buy a fancy bento box off Jlist or something silly like that, because they're expensive and not always practical. Your basic plastic tupperware-style container with a tight-fitting lid will work fine for your first attempt. Lots of places sell these types of lunch boxes now for less than $10, some with removable ice packs.

I tend to think of a bento as a tiny dinner with protein, starch and vegetable components. It doesn't have to be all Japanese, of course, but a lot of people like to be traditional like that. Feel free to start off with a sandwich + some extra goodies: deviled egg, a bit of hummus and carrot sticks, some edamame, candy/chocolate, etc. For a more Japanese-style, maybe pork/chicken nuggets (rolled in panko!), rice, some tonkatsu sauce in a little side bottle (or drizzled over your rice), some steamed sugar snap peas tossed in a bit of soy sauce/sesame oil, etc.

It can be a bit more work, but a lot of fun. Personally, I find it's easier to pack it the night before, but that depends on what you want to put in it. Have fun! :)
