What are you doing for school lunches? Buying, making or skipping?
I need ideas for boxed lunches! I love bento style lunches but I have never tried my hand at them. Does anyone here do them? What do you suggest? Tips? Thanks.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)Kids have to eat school lunches? As in...it's compulsory?
And you're in Texas?
What?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)I plan on making my own sandwiches, maybe packing a salad, but nothing as fancy as a bento, alas.

Usually I just take some homemade iced coffee and a snack and eat at home.

It's cold, and there's ice in it, so it's all iced to me!

I usually pack a sandwich + fruit (especially since my schedule is short this semester) but I bought food twice because I forgot to pack food and my friend kinda forced to go out to eat.
For bento-style stuff, you can do things like rolling sandwiches, octopus hot dogs, leftovers if you can microwave...

It's very frustrating. And she says the school lunches are gross and won't eat them.

This was a good blog, but hasn't been updated in a while, the older recipes are good though:

I'm actually glad about this though - I'm part-time flex, so I can still give myself a three-day weekend every week as long as I get my work in earlier. Or if something happens and I can't work on, say, Tuesday, I can make up the hours on Friday. Whew. Also hoping that once classes actually start, we'll be busy enough that they'll give me more to do than bum around looking for broken links on the website. :D
Lunches... I have always been boring and just made a peanut butter and [jam/apple/banana/raisin/nutella/whatever] sandwich, so I'm kind of useless in that department.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 03:19 am (UTC)(link)I switched to a bigger uni in a different city and still did the sandwich/fruit etc thing. Boring, but cheap. Went home for lunch a lot too. I saved leftovers for the next night's dinner so I'd only have to cook every other day.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:48 am (UTC)(link)I tend to think of a bento as a tiny dinner with protein, starch and vegetable components. It doesn't have to be all Japanese, of course, but a lot of people like to be traditional like that. Feel free to start off with a sandwich + some extra goodies: deviled egg, a bit of hummus and carrot sticks, some edamame, candy/chocolate, etc. For a more Japanese-style, maybe pork/chicken nuggets (rolled in panko!), rice, some tonkatsu sauce in a little side bottle (or drizzled over your rice), some steamed sugar snap peas tossed in a bit of soy sauce/sesame oil, etc.
It can be a bit more work, but a lot of fun. Personally, I find it's easier to pack it the night before, but that depends on what you want to put in it. Have fun! :)
