I don't understand this secret? What is having an OT3 a solution to? Because all my OT3 pairings are the result of, "If these two people are hot, THESE THREE PEOPLE ARE EVEN HOTTER!!!!"

to preventing ship wars, I guess? Or preventing one character from being alone? I ship ot3s only when I feel like all three have great chemistry, personally.

This. My OT3s are based on chemistry and hotness, and not so much a solution to anything.

For me, I generally ship the seperated parts too. OR actually, like two out of the three.

Kirk/Bones/Spock, I ship Kirk/Bones and Spock/Bones
Sam/Dean/Castiel, I ship Sam/Castiel and Dean/Castiel.

So I guess my 0T3s are there to let me ship that other pairing.

You and me, we share a brain.

If I like a threesome, it's because I like all three of those people together. Shipping solution actually doesn't really mean anything, because often the threesome is far rarer than the pairings possible in those three characters.

Sam/Dean/Cas? FUCKING RARE! I have read whole reams more Wincest and Destiel than I have of my beloved Wincestiel.

Right at the moment I don't have an OT3, just incidental threesomes when someone pairs Fili and Kili up with a third person.

What is having an OT3 a solution to?

everything

It's a solution for ALL THE THINGS. Are they all hot? ot3. Do they have an awesome dynamic all together? ot3. Love two pairings that share one character? OT3 LIKE CRAZY.

Love triangles are so dumb sometimes, I'd much rather have all three being happy together.

I love OT3s as well! I wasn't knocking on them (if that is the impression people got). D:

I think we're all just agreeing with each other

What is having an OT3 a solution to?

love triangles, for a lot of people. For example, on Teen Wolf Scott/Allison has been a thing since S1. S2 introduced onscreen chemistry between Scott and Isaac even though it'll never be canon. Then 3A introduced the possibility of Allison/Isaac. So there has been an upsurge in the number of Scott/Allison/Isaac fics that are being written to make up for the triangle the show is creating.

Huh. I wonder if some fans of that actively think, "This is the solution to my pairings," or if it just happens because of hotness/chemistry like for me. There has to be at least some who do.

Oh I'm sure that it's some of both.

Often it's a combination. i.e. in White Collar, the canon married couple are an absolutely fantastic couple with really good "old married couple" chemistry, but then the fandom's popular slash pairing is also highly charged and all three of them are kind of ridiculously attractive so the solution is just to put them all together.

I think White Collar is the one fandom where an OT3 is the most dominant/popular ship in the fandom, or at least open relationship (as opposed to most fandoms breaking up one couple to set up another). o.O

I've seen a lot of people use OT3 as a solution to love triangles, in a kinda "Don't fight over ships people! Just OT3 them!" and I can see where that might get annoying to someone who just isn't into OT3s.

I just love OT3s though. I have OT3s in nearly every fandom. The icon I'm using is one of me favorite OT3s.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Late but...you know how people will do the whole 'Don't have a ship war, ship everyone/everyone!'? I'm fairly certain that's what the OP is referring to, and that can get really annoying, even if you ship all three ships as pairings [but can't get into them as an ot3 for whatever reason.]

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's the solution of choice in Leverage and White Collar fandoms, it seems. Because people thing Neil and Peter are a great couple, but no one wants to break up Peter and his KICKASS wife El, so, solution--threesome! Same in Leverage, canon ship is Parker/Hardison, but there are strong Parker/Eliot, Eliot/Hardison contingents, so lots of times people are like "No one has to be lonely, fuck it, threesome!"

Though I do think in Leverage there is some strong chemistry AS a threesome, like you said....
