I don't understand this secret? What is having an OT3 a solution to? Because all my OT3 pairings are the result of, "If these two people are hot, THESE THREE PEOPLE ARE EVEN HOTTER!!!!"

I have trouble getting into OT3s (or more) too. I think it's because I tend to heavily prefer some of the dynamics within the group over others and it feels uneven.

I'm not sure it's about being boring, I think that to some of us it just feels natural.

I've been part of several such trio's in my life, and while nothing really happened, there was this tension, these little tings...that just seemed magical then, and it felt like you'd be together forever and take on the world.

I don't find it a particularly exotic fantasy myself, in a sense it is the opposite, it has a familiarness. It's like the fantasy of being able to play out those friendships of your youth , but with the adult dimension added in.

I'm not really into OT3s either. Most of them just don't seem very realistic to me. Sure, there are poly people, but if there's a character who's canonically very jealous for example, I can't imagine them sharing their lover. I'm fine with OT3s when I find them believable, but most of the time it's just "I want A, B and C to screw, whether that makes sense or not."

Hey, my OT3 these days is Finwë/Miriel/Indis and trust me, that would have been the solution to a lot of things. Like potential fratricide and civil war and whatnot. (They're also quite lovely to each other.)

Maybe I'm just boring, but I've never been able to get behind fandom's solution of One True Threesome-ing any canon "trio" of characters (love triangle or not).

I don't usually ship them either. Like in Haven (thank you anon elsewhere in thread for reminding me) I'm all over Audrey/Nathan and Duke/Nathan, but for some reason I've never been able to get into Audrey/Duke. I just have very specific tastes, and usually not all angles work for me.

The only time I can recall digging the idea of an OT3 was in Vikings. Then the show went and screwed that up for me. So thanks, Vikings.

I appreciate the way this sentiment has been expressed, because in the same way that two people appeal to me more than one or three, I vastly prefer the chocolate to peanut butter ratio in the original Reese's cup to that in either the miniature or the big cup.

I wasn't into OT3s until I got into an OT3, but it's so heavily dependent on character and context that I'd never say that I'm into OT3s in general. For me it only works when there's equal amounts of chemistry between all of the characters in question, and I would believe that they'd be into poly, and they're in a social context where it would be possible. That's fairly rare. But when it works, it works.

It really depends on two factors, personally:

1.) Whether they all have chemistry with one another.
2.) How horny I am.

It's really rare for me to have an OT3 - it's not usually my thing, so for it to work for me it really needs to be plausible in canon and feel true to the characters and so on. And while I really dislike love triangles, being told that OT3ing it is a solution (I have a few friends who always say this, so I get where you're coming from, OP) does nothing for me because 99% of the time it doesn't make sense to me based on my interpretations of the characters.

Porny stuff is a different story, although it's not super duper my thing there either. But sometimes hot! It just comes down to personal preference really, and that's nothing to do with being boring or not.

Um... it's not really a solution to ship wars or whatever you think it's a solution for though.

I have a couple OT3s myself and for me, it has to be the right dynamics, and the right temperaments for it to work but when it does, it's lovely.

But hey, if all anybody wants is the porn, more power to them. It's not like anyone's ever just shipped two characters together to watch them fuck, right?

Threesomes as solutions to shipwars piss me the fuck off.

I'm fine if you want to write a fic because you think the three could work together and develop them that way--but the idle comments that "Man, I can't decide between A/B and C/B, so A/B/C all the way!!", especially when one of the two "rivals" is the jealous/demanding type. Like, they wouldn't want to 'share' anyway???
