I'm not really into OT3s either. Most of them just don't seem very realistic to me. Sure, there are poly people, but if there's a character who's canonically very jealous for example, I can't imagine them sharing their lover. I'm fine with OT3s when I find them believable, but most of the time it's just "I want A, B and C to screw, whether that makes sense or not."

This is the case for me too. I don't find them believable most of the time.

This is basically my thought on OT3's as well. I haven't seen many of them that don't involve just throwing all the characters together for the sake of fucking.

Yep, pretty much. Also, I usually have this problem with smaller casts. I don't believe there are three (or more) poly people in the Avengers. I believe there are three (or more) poly people in the world of Lord of the Rings.

I have the jealous person in the OT3 be the one who is slowly eased into the concept by the one she'd be jealous of. (It helps though that she doesn't hate the other person or anything, they're actually canon BFFs, she's just insecure.)

This.

The OT3 in my fandom consists of the juggernaut slash pairing smushed together with the (canonical) het pairing. In theory the writers could take this anywhere. In practice the female character ALWAYS seems to have an amused-maternal "oh you boys" thing going on. It's incredibly OOC and it pisses me off because it's like she's become some kind of poly Stepford wife.

some kind of poly Stepford wife

Got it in a nutshell. Someone sent me a story like this to beta and I regret to say that I freaked out completely. I haven't been able to read anything in that series since. Believable characterisation, it exists.
