Because you get ragged on, and get the "you need a tan" a lot. I never said anything about my being pale as a kid, but I sure got the "you need a tan."

It's always mystified me why so many other people are fixated on that and sometimes people who are really pale, they are pre-empting the comments from others by stating how white they are.

Ah, okay, that makes a lot of sense, I can see how that can become habit if you're always to getting reactions from the peanut gallery (like the other anon whose friends cracked up at how pale s/he was in the sun). But yeah, the fact that people are so fixated in the first place is weird. Paleness isn't some kind of affliction that needs fixing, unless your life's dream is to suntan, I guess.

Except it is. In a lot of media you will see that paleness is a serious flaw and if you have it you MUST want to fix it. It's also the butt of any and all jokes relating to skin color (because it's the only PC joke you can make about skin color).

So yeah, society does see it as an aesthetic flaw and everybody in the world feels free to poke fun at you because of it.

People who say that must never have met white people so pale they don't tan - they burn.

I can tan, but only a little before I start burning. My Mum? No tan, ever. She just burns.
