This should not be a secret. Nor should you be ashamed of this. Mister Rogers was awesome.

Well, there was good in the world. R.I.P, Fred Rogers.

It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood~

[Picture is Fred McFeely Rogers, the host from the TV show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". He is a middle-aged man with light skin and short dark hair that is graying. He is wearing a white shirt, a dark tie, a red sweater, dark blue pants and is putting on blue and white sneaker shoes. He is sitting on a wooden bench or seat indoors and smiling at the camera. There is a potted plant behind him.]

Whenever I feel horrible, looking up stuff about this man always reminds me that there is good in the world.

Um, transciption anon? I know this is a bit late, but a heads up - "McFeely" was actually a character on his show, not the man himself.

...am I the only one who watched Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood constantly when I was a toddler, and thought nothing of it, but on rewatch, found it to be creepy, condescending to the extreme, and totally hypnotic in a I-am-planting-Manchurian-Candidate-signals-in-your-head-RIGHT-NOW kind of way?

...just me then?

I didn't watch it as a child, but when I ended up seeing some of it as a teenager it gave me a creepy feeling. However, as an adult, I no longer get that weird feeling from it, and knowing what I know about him as a person makes the whole thing really sweet.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
tbh honest he does speak in a very unsettling way

tbh, I got that feeling when I was young--I couldn't really stand Mr. Rogers as a kid. But all the things I've heard about him as a teenager/adult are pretty sweet. The show just didn't work for me. (I haven't rewatched to see if my opinion would change at all, though I did listen to a video of him out of the show, and I think it's something about how he talks.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
While I can't speak for creepy, I think the "condescending to the extreme" and "extremely hypnotic" come from the fact that you are looking back as a (young?) adult with all the experiences of your life, and the ability to look at things from a nuanced, complicated way.

Yes, sometimes we treat children like, well, children, and protect them more than they need. But they also can't understand Tolstoy and talk of microeconomics (even if some people think so. Look at all the idiots who were convinced that Sesame Street told children jail was totally ok rather than saying "hey, just because your mom/dad is in jail doesn't mean YOU are a bad person" or were equally angry on the other side that the show didn't go into a long diatribe about how everyone in jail didn't do terrible things). Shows like Sesame Street and MRN, etc, were written for children in language they understand.

Tl;dr: when you hear things in simplified speech as an adult, you hear condescending and hypnotic, but as a child it was just the language you needed to understand what was going on.

I can see where you might get that, but I was actually referring to how he was outside of the show. As far as how he talked, I'm fairly certain it was just how he talked. If you look up the video where he's addressing congress, he talks the same way there and I seriously doubt he's condescending to them, particularly since he's asking them to support something.

Mr Rogers made me incredibly angry as a child because he would take off his outside shoes and put on inside shoes (WTF?) that were exactly the same as his outside shoes, then take off his outside sweater and put on his exactly the same inside sweater. I couldn't watch his show because of that. It still makes me a little angry, to be honest.

But by all accounts, he was a wonderful person and I hope his memory and his show live on forever.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
That made you angry? That seems like an odd emotion to have regarding something like that.

maybe he's the kind of person that goes to a sale and buys like five of the same thing, so he has a bazillion identical sweaters and pairs of shoes, so he has his outdoor sweater and shoes, and his indoor sweater and shoes, so he doesn't drag in dirt and stuff

(I don't do the indoor/outdoor shoes, but it does seem practical to keep your house's floors a bit cleaner for a bit longer)

In fairness, the sweaters he would put on 'inside' the house were actually made by his mother.
