But yeah, I understand the sentiment I guess. Some things just aren't the same when you go back to them years later.

We all have our, uh..."youthful indiscretions" when it comes to ships.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)Besides, my H/D friends always said the ship wasn't supposed to be in character. That was part of the fun. I think a few people did ship it in the "and it's totes canon or I stop reading the books" sense, but for the most part it was always knowingly and deliberately OOC AFAIK. (I never really read it myself.)

I have never read a single Harry/Draco fic that was truly in-character.
Not secret: I used to be in fandom, One True Pairing-ed them hard.
Bonus secret: They kind of make me cringe now, not sure why. I still love Harry Potter itself.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 01:16 am (UTC)(link)But I've been on a kick lately where I've returned to HP fanfic, and I'm pretty pleased with the number of "epilogue? what epilogue?" fics that do a pretty believable job of adapting the characters we knew into characters who grew up a bit and could reasonably deal with the aftermath and a later relationship. Not as many as I'd like, and some definitely still have some leftover shades of leather pants!Draco, or inexplicably tall/dashing/gallant Harry, but there are some decent ones out there, and quite a few more that aren't exactly IC but still manage to be enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)I mean, there's OOC without reason, and there's, "Here is the situation, here is my developing these characters to respond to the situation, here is their final personality that seems a far cry from their canon personalities because They Have Been Through Shit."
just my two knuts~
(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 03:40 am (UTC)(link)I used to write H/D rather a lot and was terribly conscious of how I wrote Draco in particular, since fanon!Draco was so prevalent. There were many popular Draco characterizations, not just ice prince sex god leather pants Draco. I always strived to keep him pretty lame, whiny, sarcastic but not in a witty or snarky way, and not remotely Whedonian or leather-clad. I really cared that he still came across as the Draco from the books and it was a point of pleasure for me to deliberately not try and redeem him, make him any cooler or smarter, and still find a way to write the H/D dynamic enjoyably.
I wouldn't say characterization was a top priority for a lot of H/D fans, even though honestly the difference in character is what is fun (for me) and attractive about H/D. But for a lot of people writing SHIPPY FIC, where the point is that they get together, it's about resolving their differences and bringing the tension between to a close or curbing it or something. To me, that kinda clips the wings of H/D, but we all want different kinds of fic!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 06:58 am (UTC)(link)Now I'm going through another H/D binge. I don't really like fanon!Draco, and love it when I find fics that break away from that mold, but I still devour the stuff, haha. IDK. It's like comfort food. Ranch Pringles and mac'n'cheese.

I just wonder how many shippers are long term fans who refuse to give up on their ship, despite the fact that it really doesn't work.
