It happens to all of us anon. *thinks back to DBZ fanfiction* *cringes*

Heh, I don't know about HP but I'm a fairly active lurker in the DBZ fandom and I've read some really good fic.

But yeah, I understand the sentiment I guess. Some things just aren't the same when you go back to them years later.

Yeah, pretty much.

We all have our, uh..."youthful indiscretions" when it comes to ships.

Gundam Wing fanfic was just bizarre sometimes. All sorts of fanon that people treated like canon - both characterization and flat out plot development.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, OF COURSE it was OOC! You didn't read it for its IC-ness.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Just what I was coming to say. Why would you ever expect Harry/Draco to be IC? It's like expecting Dumbledore/Snape to be IC.

Heeeee. This exactly. I eat it up with a spoon though.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it be hard for them to be totally in character? I mean, in canon Draco spends half his time rubbing in Harry's orphan status. I find it a little hard to believe they'd go from that to lovers without some tweaks alone. (Not criticizing the ship, just talking in terms of being in character...)

Besides, my H/D friends always said the ship wasn't supposed to be in character. That was part of the fun. I think a few people did ship it in the "and it's totes canon or I stop reading the books" sense, but for the most part it was always knowingly and deliberately OOC AFAIK. (I never really read it myself.)

This is why hate sex was invented I guess.

[Picture is a colored drawing of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from the "Harry Potter" movies/books. Harry is depicted as a young man with short black hair, light olive skin and wearing eyeglasses, a white shirt and brown pants/trousers. Draco has pale skin, very pale blond hair reaching past his ears and is wearing an unbuttoned green shirt and black pants/trousers. They're standing close to each other, their eyes half-lidded and Harry is reaching with a hand inside Draco's shirt, near his hip.]

I have never read a single Harry/Draco fic that was truly in-character.

Not secret: I used to be in fandom, One True Pairing-ed them hard.

Bonus secret: They kind of make me cringe now, not sure why. I still love Harry Potter itself.

Lol, I always thought part of the fun of Harry/Draco was the author coming of for elaborate character redesigns for Draco that managed to justify and redeem his basically inexcusable behaviour in the books. Which is actually pretty difficult, which is why my favourite flavour of H/D ended up being Post-War fics where Draco as an adult has either paid for his crimes or realised he was on the wrong side and was an insufferable git to boot, while Harry remains skeptical, and also as dense as he always was. And I'd say some of those are close enough to plausible for the characters not to take you out of the story.

None of the mega-popular H/D fics I've read was IC, though you can argue it doesn't necessarily make something completely not enjoyable. But I have read some lesser known, but still highly recommended stories that were shockingly IC. Few if any had a happy ending, which may explain their lack of popularity.

That's because we had fanon!Draco, the collective hallucination of the Harry Potter fandom.

Same here and I'm a massive H/D shipper (to this day actually, god now I'm craving H/D fic like crazy...) I feel like at some point the fandom collectively decided to throw away IC characterisation for Draco and just make shit up.

I feel this way about every single one of my older fandoms/ships. I'm sure in a few years I'll feel the same about my current ships, lol.

But I've been on a kick lately where I've returned to HP fanfic, and I'm pretty pleased with the number of "epilogue? what epilogue?" fics that do a pretty believable job of adapting the characters we knew into characters who grew up a bit and could reasonably deal with the aftermath and a later relationship. Not as many as I'd like, and some definitely still have some leftover shades of leather pants!Draco, or inexplicably tall/dashing/gallant Harry, but there are some decent ones out there, and quite a few more that aren't exactly IC but still manage to be enjoyable.

If everything else is well-executed enough, I think fic can sometimes get away with being OOC in much the same way as it can get away with things like 'everyone has daemons' AUs. If the fic is otherwise solid and you're able to tolerate/suspend disbelief for that one aspect, it can still make for an enjoyable read- which is ultimately the purpose of most fanfic reading anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
We must not have read a lot of the same fics...

I mean, there's OOC without reason, and there's, "Here is the situation, here is my developing these characters to respond to the situation, here is their final personality that seems a far cry from their canon personalities because They Have Been Through Shit."

just my two knuts~

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
For an antagonistic "we are on opposite sides of a war and believe completely different things" pairing like H/D, if it was really 100% IC, they wouldn't... hook up or have sexual tension or anything... so merely by pushing them together, one is bending the characters to a will that is not the characters' own. The result can be fic they're still very true-feeling, even if they're factually OOC if written by anyone other than JKR, but a lot of the time characterization gets sacrificed on the altar of porn. Or fluff, w/e. A friend pointed out to me that with popular ships especially, some authors feel obligated to write to a certain "getting together" formula. You can find this formula everywhere, not just with H/D, but authors do like to serve what they know their audience wants.

I used to write H/D rather a lot and was terribly conscious of how I wrote Draco in particular, since fanon!Draco was so prevalent. There were many popular Draco characterizations, not just ice prince sex god leather pants Draco. I always strived to keep him pretty lame, whiny, sarcastic but not in a witty or snarky way, and not remotely Whedonian or leather-clad. I really cared that he still came across as the Draco from the books and it was a point of pleasure for me to deliberately not try and redeem him, make him any cooler or smarter, and still find a way to write the H/D dynamic enjoyably.

I wouldn't say characterization was a top priority for a lot of H/D fans, even though honestly the difference in character is what is fun (for me) and attractive about H/D. But for a lot of people writing SHIPPY FIC, where the point is that they get together, it's about resolving their differences and bringing the tension between to a close or curbing it or something. To me, that kinda clips the wings of H/D, but we all want different kinds of fic!

I felt the same way for about the last four years.

Now I'm going through another H/D binge. I don't really like fanon!Draco, and love it when I find fics that break away from that mold, but I still devour the stuff, haha. IDK. It's like comfort food. Ranch Pringles and mac'n'cheese.

I was reading H/D back before the release of OotP. With every book since then Draco has, IMO, been less and less believable as a romance option with anyone Gryffindor, not just Harry.

I just wonder how many shippers are long term fans who refuse to give up on their ship, despite the fact that it really doesn't work.
