Whenever people say "don't worry about Tauriel, Peter Jackson did a great job with the Lord of the Rings women," I'm reminded he took Arwen from badass to damsel-in-distress, needing Aragorn to save her. (That plot didn't make any sense but whatever.) and took Eowyn, from the Slayer of the Witchking (also known as Sauron's second-in-command) to immediately needing Aragorn and Gimli to save her from an orc (extended edition only - the theatrical release ignored her until her cameo at the coronation) and that doesn't even touch on how Arwen's arc revolves around Aragorn and her love for him ... and hwo the same is true, to a lesser extent, for Eowyn.
So, in short, Peter Jackson's track record with Lord of the Rings women isn't that great. At least Tauriel's romance with ??? doesn't seem to be a big part of her character.
