Dead Republican Lady House Adventure, Part 2

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-27 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Following on from finding some magnificent art, our heroes (my roommates) discovered some more of Dead Republican Lady's treasures; sixteen books by Republican pundits.

...not that I am ordinarily a fan of such things, but might I suggest fire?

Fire seems to be failing.

I am horrified, because typically in myth, when fire falls, people become gods.

Wood chipper? Dissolve them in acid?

I did a book burning with some L Ron Hubbard claptrap a few years ago, and it required significantly more lighter fluid than I'd expected.

Is there a way to see the images without a twitter account? I keep getting 'We automatically hide photos and videos that might contain sensitive content. Sign in to apply your media display settings.'

Are you not seeing the 'display this' button you can push to see the pictures? I don't have a twitter account myself, so I get the message and the button.

So let me get this straight.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-08-28 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
You disagreed with a book, so you... burned it.

You burned a book.

You had a book burning and you took pictures.

Yeah way to show those repressive weirdos

I did not participate on account of being over a thousand miles away, but yeah! It's a pity what they had to resort to due to being unable to burn Sarah Palin in person.

In a more general sense, I think it's interesting what book-burning still supposedly represents when books are not where information resides - books being only a tiny part of Sarah Palin's career, and I doubt she is the kind of celeb who writes their own books. The real Sarah Palin is inside your tv set! Destroying the book becomes pure vandalism funtiems, with a side of WHY NOT because what else were they going to do with the books except put them in the trash? which just has the same result more slowly.

I don't know. People tend to get angry when you burn books. It's a heavily symbolic act, much more than just tossing stuff in a dumpster. Further, they decided it was tons of fun and took pictures. Again, it wasn't just books they thought were poorly written. It was books they disagreed with ideologically.

This is something people who are bad at arguing have been doing for a couple centuries.

I'm not defending Sarah Palin by any means. But if your friends ever try to pass themselves off as particularly enlightened, friends of free inquiry and all that, I hope someone digs up those twitter photos. They're happily descending to the level of the people they dislike.

I mean go ahead and fantasize about burning people to death. That's totally not really offputting.

Meh, it's too late/early/etc. but chard, I honestly can't tell if you're trolling or not. I think this may be more a sign that people don't think of books the way they used to (because Everything is On The Internet donchaknow) and book-burning, as a whole thing, isn't really equivalent in people's minds to "destroying knowledge" etc. anymore. Plus, I would not put thene's roomies on the same level with, e.g., Terry Jones, who likes to burn religious texts that have inherent value to some people beyond the content of the texts themselves.

...Except when they burned Harry Potter b/c it was about "witchcraft" -- that was hilarious and not nearly as edgy as they were going for.

My point is given all the media play about a small subset of whackjob US fundies burning books, I think thene's roommates probably decided "an eye for an eye" was the best option. Metaphorically speaking. Since people of Palin's particular ilk are down with book-burnings already. Sadly. But! Not sadly, the Internet basically makes book-burning look passe to some people. Which is why Fahrenheit 451 does not have NEARLY the impact today that it should. Even though the "walls" featured as the pacifier in the book are basically what we are living with, and a 100% true prediction by Bradbury.

If you were trolling, just ignore my serious reply. :-P

You really don't get what is and is not appropriate to say, do you?

You weren't at all funny fyi.
