The only thing that devastates me is that SasuNaru hasn't a shred of canon. I think they'd work out better together than either girl option. If there had to be a het end, Sakura is a the best option. Nothing against Hinata, but she could do better.

This fake rumor about Kishi collecting SasuNaru works raised my hopes, but I was a fool to believe...

Well, SasuNaru did get that accidental kiss, which none of the other pairings got. Seriously, anyone else remember a kiss in this manga? Ever? We never even got an on-screen marriage for Asuma/Kurenai...

FFS, why do yaoi fangirls always bring that moment up?

It was used for comedy of two guys who started off hating each other got accidently knocked into each other and then gagged and vomited afterwards out of pure disgust.

The way fangirls talk about it you'd think it was more passionate, but their eyes wide with shock and the disgust afterwards showed it's not meant to be taken seriously.

I posted that comment so I'll respond: Forget the actual kiss for a moment, the point here is that no other characters have a long running mutual connection like Naruto and Sasuke.

The only runners up for this were Sasuke and Itachi, but besides being siblings that ended with Itachi's (final death) and Kurenai and Asuma (who had their entire relationship off screen and suddenly confirmed via Kurenai having a kid). Every other 'ship' is essentially one-sided and so far, unrequited.

I've never understood this line of thought. The development Naruto and Sasuke got as friends in part one was zero to minimal. They were firmly established as rivals, yes, and a large part of development was devoted to Sasuke taking Naruto seriously as a rival/fellow ninja, but Sakura + Sasuke and Sakura + Naruto got far more in the way of actual connection and understanding.

If you read part one all at once, the realization of how rushed and shallow Naruto and Sasuke's relationship is becomes shockingly apparent. Ever since then, it's just been Naruto haring after Sasuke for all of part two. Hardly the deep connection fandom presents it as, and certainly not a greater understanding than Hinata has of Naruto or so on. Cover art does not a friendship make. This is my beef with how long-standing Naruto fandom is, tbh. Fanon/headcanon gets set in stone over such a long period of time (Sasuke and Naruto are best friends! Sasuke never cared about Sakura! Naruto is stupid!) and never challenged despite canon actively contradicting it.

Not op, but I both agree and disagree with your points. I do think part 1 was pretty rushed and the development to friendship was severely lacking. For the most part, I think it's just Naruto really wanting to be acknowledged by Sasuke because of his own projections and insecurities. There's no real attempt at friendship, but as rivals they did connect and that's one of the bigger reasons why their relationship is more dynamic. Valley of the end arc shows that. Not friends, but brothers. Sasuke's always been that measuring stick for Naruto while Sasuke himself doesn't care as long as he's stronger than Naruto.

Hinata may have an understanding of Naruto, but it's on a very specific narrow aspect. She admires and understands what she wants to see, but Naruto has shown very very few moments where the feelings are reversed other than the understanding that they're both lacking and were underestimated. In all honesty, I think that theme works better with Lee and emphasized with Neji.

SA.

I agree with this tbh, but in the realm of "Big 3 + 1" love interests for Naruto, I think Hinata has a greater understanding than Sakura or Sasuke and maybe more importantly a greater willingness to understand Naruto than either of them. I like Naruto and Sakura's friendship but they often seem to be at cross purposes when it comes to communicating and stuff like dealing with Jiraiya's death.

Of course in a perfect world I would have NaruSai but :(

I think people are focusing on what the manga has been trying its hardest to sell us since the Valley of the End, that Naruto and Sasuke have this epic, predestined connection as Uchiha and Senju, as teammates, as adopted brothers, as the sole survivors of great tragedies, so on and so forth, instead of what the manga has actually provided, laughably hollow and meaningless interaction where Naruto is chasing the ideal of a friendship he never had, and Sasuke hasn't really given a shit either way in years.

Their "amazing" relationship, like many plot threads from Part I, has only been given lip-service, but to say it's only headcanon is wrong. It's definitely canon that their Their Love Is So Epic, it's just really fucking poorly cobbled-together canon, like Sakura's enduring love for Sasuke, and everything about Obito.

I think they deserve to be inflicted on each other more than any of the girls. And I actually like Naruto, but hey, if he wants Sasuke so badly, take him. Anything to keep him away from Sakura.
