How on Middle-earth is Arwen a damsel-in-distress in the books? If it's because she's not doing much in the War of the Ring, then a bunch of other characters (including male ones) are as well. And really the point of her story and her tragedy is that she has to make a choice between the man she loves and her family, and that she ends up choosing mortality even though it ultimately seems that she does not accept it or want it.
Now you can call that sexist since much of her choice revolves around a man (or two men, since a lot of it also has to do with Elrond), and also because all of that happens in an Appendix and she really is underdeveloped in the main text... but that still doesn't make her damsel in distress to me.
