I am withholding any opinion on Tauriel until I actually see her onscreen. All we have seen of her is her questioning what they (the Mirkwood Elves) are doing, and that's all.

I'm actually far more likely to get judgey on her for exactly what they end up doing with the romance thing with Kili. I like Kili, I think he's Cute and Adorable (capitalization totally deliberate). I'm also a pretty hardcore slasher and prefer to think of him with Fili, Bilbo, Thorin in a pinch, or Boromir (blame fanfic).

As for Arwen and Eowyn, others have said it before: Most of their stories in the movies are pretty accurately transferred from the books (Arwen's "linked to the Ring" thing notwithstanding).

Book!Arwen sits in Rivendell and sews a banner. That's all she does. At least the movies have some of the Appendices story included (i.e. the whole thing about her outliving Aragorn if she stays). They made good use of that with the plot about should she go to Valinor or not.

Eowyn, well by the time she gets incidentally "rescued" (and it is incidental, because Aragorn doesn't even see her there as he takes down Gothmog) she's already injured and got first stage Black Breath (the illness Aragorn later treats her for in the Houses of Healing). I actually think that scene says something interesting about how Aragorn is not looking for her on the battlefield, and it ends up being her brother who finds her. (BTW, I love that the Houses of Healing scene ended up with Eomer there. He's her brother! Of course he would be worried!)

I also think Eowun has a pretty strong story with the thing about her loving Aragorn. She realised he was not what she wanted, or needed and eventually met someone who was right for her.

I try to be the same why, wait for the movie, although in context her questioning of whatever they are doing comes across as elevating her to the one sane, unprejudiced lone female figure (and she already stands out, as the only red-headed elf, plus apparently she is Thranduil's ward), and sure, she might end up being awesome, but I gotta say, the trailer did not make me excited.

Since you point it out, I'm now looking slightly askance at her hair colour too, mainly because one of my favourite Elves is a redhead (namely Maedhros). Evangeline Lilly is not even a redhead, so my running theory about natural hair colour dictating wig colour doesn't extend to her.

Frankly I'm more interested to see how Legolas will be portrayed in the next movie. How severe is his anti-dwarf attitude and how will that reflect on how he was portrayed in LotR?

Mostly though, I am fangirling the Dwarves, and Bilbo. They're the ones I'm most interested in.

What on earth bothers you about the fact that Tauriel has the same hair colour as Maedhros? Where does it say in the Shibboleth of Fëanor or wherever it was that Maedhros was a red-head and HE's THE ONLY ONE HANDS OFF EVERYONE ELSE? It's not even like Tolkien mentioned red hair as being a specifically Noldo thing...

And you're also ready to dislike her because she might get in the way of slashing? For fuck's sake, a female character is now only acceptable if she in now way resembles an elf you like or is paired with a character you're slashing? Greaaat.

No, I don't expect the Feanorions to be the only redheads. I only look slightly askance at that because there's a part of me that wonders if someone decided on red because they were fans of of the sons of Feanor. I certainly didn't claim it was a logical thing.

And what's wrong with me having personal preferences because I like slash? All I mean is that my opinion on her may be coloured by my preferences.

Of course, if you're going to fly off the handle over my thoughts and opinions, I will reserve the right to think you are an annoying ass.
