You know, I never understood why he was called Kakarot and Goku. I remember watching the show when I was younger and being thoroughly confused. I agree with you though. I like the way it sounds more than Goku.

Further information...

Kakarot, like all Saiyan names (at least in the Japanese*), is a pun on a vegetable - carrot, in this case. (Vegeta is from vegetable, Nappa is a type of cabbage, Raditz is from radish, and so forth.)

Son Goku (his full Earth name) is the Japanese name for Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Journey to the West, of which Dragon Ball was a parody back when it started. His flying cloud and extending staff are further references to Wukong.

* A couple were lost in dubbing...Bardock is the only one of his crew to keep his original name, and thus the vegetable pun in the English dub of the movie they appeared in, IIRC, for instance.

I will never forgive them for "Bulla". It makes me think of icecream (there's a brand here in Australia by that name). Also, I was in the fandom before GT got dubbed, so I always saw her referred to as "Bra".

I always liked the name Kakarot better than Goku. Not enough to name something real it, of course. Just a Pokemon.

I can still remember back when I was a kid all the other children at school made fun of the name 'Kakarot' because it invoked "Kaka" (poo) and "Karotte" (carrot).
