I kind of hate it when people do this. Not the headcanoning characters as non-binary, but doing it specifically because of how they dress. Clothes don't have anything to do with someone's gender. A woman wearing men's jeans does not make her less of a woman and vice versa. It probably wouldn't bug me as much if I didn't see a lot of people thinking this way outside of headcanons.

i should have been more specific; almost all of those characters present themselves as a gender different than their physical sex, even to other characters. it's not just in the clothing, its how they refer to themselves.

Chihiro doesn't really refer to themselves as female though? Even looking uncomfortable when Mondo says "it's ok to be weak since you're a girl".

S/he's actively presenting as female. It's not clear whether s/he identifies as female, but s/he is making a deliberate effort to be seen as a girl.

S/he's uncomfortable when Mondo tells him/her it's okay to be weak because s/he disagrees and is ashamed of his/her weakness.

Did you actually read the LP? Chihiro very specifically identifies as male and was making plans to reveal his true gender before he was murdered.

Chihiro uses a male pronoun for himself, speaks in a masculine way, his AIs use male terms for him, he's uncomfortable whenever he's called a girl and the AI based on him also uses male pronouns and speech too.

And Spike outright confirmed him as male-identifying.

If you honestly think it wasn't clear what he identified as, go through the game again. The only reason he presented as female was that when he presented as a guy when he was younger, he was bullied by his entire group of peers for being too weak to be a "proper" guy according to Japan's gender standards.

Chihiro's a pretty complicated case, even more so because of the fact that the truth only comes out after Chihiro's murdered and nobody ever has a chance to ask about the full story.

I actually think Chihiro's case is an interesting fictional metaphor for the experience of a transman (perceived as female, being crushed under that designation, wanting the strength to 'come out' as male), but that's potentially a whole new can of worms.
