I'd love to see more done with Lucina's decision to dress as a man. Sadly like so many other things in Awakening it was barely expanded on. I like your headcanon, though!
Also the trend of any kind of different gender/sexuality expression getting dismissed as "loltumblr" is super shitty, so don't feel bad about that. "SJW" is the hot new thing to throw at ideas people don't like in a lot of cases, so do your own thing and don't feel bad about wanting to relate to characters in ways like this when canons so often don't represent you.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen, people don't really mind those headcanons unless some of the less sane darlings start insulting and attacking anyone who dare not share the same opinion.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've been seeing lately, a lot of people jump right to "defensive crazy special snowflake" on headcanons like that without any provocation. Just immediate dismissal of concepts without real understanding. (see also: demisexuality wank.) I really think that for every batshit "SJW", there are at least 2 people intimidated out of sharing their own ideas thanks to the backlash.

I think it's not the any kind of different gender/sexuality expression being dismissed as loltumblr so much as it is the mass adoption of a countercanonical different gender/sexuality expression by a big group of fans who are filled with disdain/hatred for anyone who doesn't follow the party line.

Tumblr seems to cause the oddest things to be "trendy".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, there's that, and people who fire at others over things like that are out of line. But I've seen a distressing tendency to just assume that anyone with an idea like that is going to disembowel people for disagreeing, and that's hardly fair.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
a character whose manner of dress does not adhere to gender-related social norms associated with their physical sex

ftfy

...sorry, I have a lot of issues about clothing being identified as strictly male or female. Soooo many issues. But anyway, OP, headcanon whatever you want (it's your head), but please don't give other people grief over not agreeing with you.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you can have your headcanon, but remember that these characters are not real people and aren't specifically written as non-gendered.

Then again I always found it silly that clothes would have a 'gender' to them. They don't, not in reality, just in a cultural sort of way. One woman's skirt is another man's kilt, you know.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great OP, seriously. Just because they aren't "specifically written as non-gendered," to quote another anon, doesn't mean you should feel bad or secretive about this. There's nothing wrong with your headcanoning this and you have as much "right" to be upset with people using pronouns for them that boother you as anything. Sure, people will keep using those pronouns, for reasons you understand, but you don't have to like it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of hate it when people do this. Not the headcanoning characters as non-binary, but doing it specifically because of how they dress. Clothes don't have anything to do with someone's gender. A woman wearing men's jeans does not make her less of a woman and vice versa. It probably wouldn't bug me as much if I didn't see a lot of people thinking this way outside of headcanons.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
i should have been more specific; almost all of those characters present themselves as a gender different than their physical sex, even to other characters. it's not just in the clothing, its how they refer to themselves.

spoilers for Dangan Ronpa, Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokemon Special, Gatchaman Crowds

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-08-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for Dangan Ronpa, Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokemon Special and Gatchaman Crowds

[Picture is Chihiro Fujisaki (young, light skin, hazel eyes, medium-length light brown hair, green long-sleeved blouse with white collar reaching chest and shoulders) from the videogame "Dangan Ronpa"; Yasaburo Shimogano? from the anime "The Eccentric Family" (wearing a Japanese schoolgirl uniform with a short-sleeved white blouse, red tie and short blue skirt); Rui Ninomiya from the anime "Gatchaman Crowds" (young, light rosy skin, short voluminous black hair, white shirt, light blue sweater, blueish green eyes); Yellow from the manga "Pokémon Special" or "Pokémon Adventures" (child, black long-sleeved shirt, light tunic, denim pants, huge straw hat, light skin and light hair with huge bangs/forelocks); and Lucina from the videogame "Fire Emblem: Awakening" (young adult, pale skin, blue eyes, long blue hair, blue and dark blue light armor).]

Every time there's a character who dresses differently than their physical sex, I tend to headcanon them as non-binary. I know this is a 'tumblr trend' but it's the only way I can deal with the fact that I might not be nonbinary myself...

Bonus secret: I hate it when people use male pronouns for Chihiro or Rui, even though I know I have no right...
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

I think this stuff gets on my nerves because it implies that "man" and "woman" are narrower categories than they should be. Put anyone who deviates from the stereotype in the "other" category? Um, sure. How... Progressive? :|

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
thank you. this is exactly why i hate that whole tumblr movement - because there is no one right way to be male or female, and not fitting exactly into the little stereotyped box for your gender doesn't make you not that gender.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Even when the person doing it is themselves in the 'other' category?

There's viewing canon through a stereotyped and narrow perspective, and then there's clinging hints that a character or two might, maybe, possibly be like you because you basically never get more than hints.

Yeah, it's kind of weird. Like, I've seen people get angry at gender roles and how you can't force people into roles... then turn right around and say a certain character or person HAS to be trans* or non-binary because they like clothes not stereotypical of their gender. I mean, head canon all you want, I don't give a shit as long your not an asshole about it. But the reasons are what I find oddly sexist.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
yes, yes, thank you. Especially when the whole point of characters like Chihiro is how insanely and artificially restrictive gender roles can be.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
OK, this is a new one for me. What, exactly, does binary and non-binary mean (not talking about math)?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Binary as in 'the gender binary'- non-binary would be something other than simply male or female, which could imply IDing as both, as somewhere in between, as one or the other at different times, or as neither.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
But there's no such thing as non-binary..

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Tell that to intersex people who identify as such. Tell that to non-intersex people who physically transition. Tell that to Australians who officially change their gender to "Other". Tell that to Germans, who no longer require parents of children with ambiguous genitalia to pick male or female gender for them and operate on their healthy bodies to make them resemble it, regardless of their will.

dont worry OP, i feel the same way.

it bothers me SO MUCH when people use male pronouns for Chihiro, especially exclusively, since I headcanon her as genderfluid, preferring female pronouns but also accepting male pronouns (but not accepting gender neutral pronouns, because she feels she is either male or female, but not neither).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
except you are completely, 100% wrong and your "headcanon" contradicts all actual stated canon, which is that chihiro identifies as male. he uses male pronouns and a masculine way of speaking, his ai uses male pronouns and addresses him as a man, and he's shown to be uncomfortable being called a girl. official canon materials confirm that he identifies as male.

your headcanon is bullshit, plain and simple.
