I think this stuff gets on my nerves because it implies that "man" and "woman" are narrower categories than they should be. Put anyone who deviates from the stereotype in the "other" category? Um, sure. How... Progressive? :|

thank you. this is exactly why i hate that whole tumblr movement - because there is no one right way to be male or female, and not fitting exactly into the little stereotyped box for your gender doesn't make you not that gender.

Even when the person doing it is themselves in the 'other' category?

There's viewing canon through a stereotyped and narrow perspective, and then there's clinging hints that a character or two might, maybe, possibly be like you because you basically never get more than hints.

Eh, I'm fine with headcanons in general. You do you, folks! I just get a little uncomfortable with people who insist that their headcanon should be shared by everyone.

but here's the thing: how someone dresses has jack-all to do with their gender identity. saying "this character doesn't look or dress like their physical sex so they're trans/non-binary" is offensive no matter who does it because that is the exact same shit that is used on real trans people in real life.

OK, but this is from an OP who's questioning their own status. Maybe this is how they show it personally. Maybe they're relating to the characters in this way because they do the same way. It's not the same as someone making generalizations outside themselves.

Yeah, it's kind of weird. Like, I've seen people get angry at gender roles and how you can't force people into roles... then turn right around and say a certain character or person HAS to be trans* or non-binary because they like clothes not stereotypical of their gender. I mean, head canon all you want, I don't give a shit as long your not an asshole about it. But the reasons are what I find oddly sexist.

yes, yes, thank you. Especially when the whole point of characters like Chihiro is how insanely and artificially restrictive gender roles can be.
