dont worry OP, i feel the same way.

it bothers me SO MUCH when people use male pronouns for Chihiro, especially exclusively, since I headcanon her as genderfluid, preferring female pronouns but also accepting male pronouns (but not accepting gender neutral pronouns, because she feels she is either male or female, but not neither).

except you are completely, 100% wrong and your "headcanon" contradicts all actual stated canon, which is that chihiro identifies as male. he uses male pronouns and a masculine way of speaking, his ai uses male pronouns and addresses him as a man, and he's shown to be uncomfortable being called a girl. official canon materials confirm that he identifies as male.

your headcanon is bullshit, plain and simple.

look youre entitled to your opinion but i really dont think thats the only way to interpret chihiros actions and honestly, if you dont think theres any wiggle room at all i think youre way overly-attached to the idea of chihiro being a cisdude.

the facts of canon are that chihiro makes a concerted effort, as mentioned previously in thread, at being perceived as female - besides just the dress, chihiro doesnt correct anyone when the others believe her to be a girl, and worries constantly about what other people will do if they find out chihiro's secret.

Now you can interpret that as just shame or, if youre queer, it's a really nice allegory for being outed and passing and misgendering.

As for the uncomfotableness that chihiro displays, to me that was always more about Chihiro's shame over being weak - not at being seen as girl - because otherwise why would Chihiro try so hard to present that way?

basically chihiro was a really great character for genderqueer fans to latch onto and maybe for once enjoy some representation because no one actually gives a shit about us and maybe in this one character we could finally have someone like us

but you know

thanks for being an asshole about it

(yeah i fucking know that chihiros canonly presented as a cisdude, like in every other piece ever, thanks for fucking reminding me, i totally did not realize on my own)

there's nothing to interpret. spike flat-out said that chihiro identifies as male.

insisting on him identifying female just because he wears female clothing (which is because he was bullied by his entire group of peers as a kid) is not just ignoring the actual problem his case touches on, it's literally misgendering him.

if you want to interpret him as trans*, you can still see him as female-to-male. but the series is completely unambiguous about him identifying as a guy.

and you are being gross and fetishizing by deliberately misgendering a character whose gender identity is explicitly stated in canon just because they don't dress in a manner usually associated with their physical sex - which, by the way, has nothing to do with being trans or anything even remotely like that and everything to do with being a commentary on japanese gender roles in society, so you're ignoring the cultural context on top of everything else.

go self-insert onto another character that doesn't contradict what the creator said.

you say that like there's a huge amount of genderqueer characters in fiction

actually, there are a few by now! they're still not super common but they're not impossible to find. a few examples off the top of my head:

-gloria union has a character that identifies as intergender
-mother 3 has the magypsies, though they seem to lean toward female-identifying
-after school nightmare's protag is intersex but male-identifying
-demon knights has a bigendered character
-no telephone to heaven also has a bigendered character
-sakura wars V has a genderqueer character, though the english translation messes a few of their lines up a bit

if you're looking for trans* characters in general instead of non-binary specifically it's even easier to find examples in fiction nowadays. it takes a bit of searching at first but there is an increasingly large number of respectfully handled trans* characters at this point.

+ a billion

Don't forget kids, it's not misgendering if you're saying they're some variety of trans.
