Yeah, I like gross things. Always have! And I like talking about gross things with like-minded people. So I kind of hate this new fandom trend where people go around saying that you need to be careful of what you say, because if you mention something disturbing, and someone who didn't want to read it runs in to it without fair warning, you will TRIGGER THEM HORRIBLY and RUIN THEIR WEEK and BRING BLIGHT AND POX UPON OUR FAIR LANDS.

I dunno. Since when do you write or talk about something with people who are appalled by it in mind? They aren't the intended audience.

You obviously aren't interested in this stuff just to cheese people off, and hence, you have nothing to apologize for. Shine on, you crazy creepy diamond!

This. So tired of people flipping their shit and passive aggressively bullying others if you don't TW stuff to the nth degree. I miss the pre-tumblr days of fandom.

I miss the pre-2000s internet.

enjoy your dialup and dancing baby gifs. sorry the trend of, like, courtesy to others is ruining your e-life.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
and here is exactly the attitude that is the problem: expecting everyone else to cater to you.

no one is obligated to warn for anything if they don't want to. they can do whatever they damn well please because the internet is as much their space as it is your space.

Exactly! What's so hard to understand about this? :/

yes as someone with PTSD who engages with fandom as stress relief, it's totally just an annoying new fandom trend specifically designed to ruin your fun time by asking that you just slap a note up top. it's really great to have hip and fashionable flashbacks and panic attacks! I love being a cool kid!!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
so

stick to archives and websites where warnings are required. shit's not that hard.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wow way to be considerate of other people to defend your funtimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
welcome to real life, sweetheart. real life doesn't come with warnings. you know whose responsibility it is to deal with that? yours. not anybody else's.

Annoying, a lot of people seem to think so. Fairly new, yes. Trend, yes, in a certain sense of the word. Specifically designed to ruin my fun time... Eh. Not my personal fun time, of course, and I don't think people always do it to ruin people's fun. I think it's mostly done because people think it's just what you do, or they earnestly think they're being helpful, or they just want to bicker and stir up trouble. Okay, maybe that last one is trying to "ruin your fun time." But online social conventions come and go for more diverse reasons than "trying to ruin people's fun" and "honestly and genuinely the best way to go about things." It's just a matter of what ideas spread and stick.

Personally, I think "warn for everything" will eventually go the way of "never ever use capslock for any reason for it is shouting and will upset people."

I want to high-five this entire comment. 'Specially that second paragraph.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
thank you. i don't have triggers, but i do have food allergies, and i learned a long time ago that the only one who can be responsible for myself is me. yelling at the people holding a bake sale that they need to have an ingredients list for everything they're selling isn't going to accomplish anything. deciding that i should only buy the chips ahoy cookies they're selling to keep myself safe? that will.

Yeah, this.

Also I don't have triggers, but there are things I'd rather not read in fics (rape, torture, etc), and I've always been able to guess if a fic was going in that direction before reaching the graphic part, even if there was no warning.
Usually the summary itself gives it away, or even the start of it.
In some occasions I had to close the tab and not finish the fic because it was heading towards stuff I didn't want to read... or just because it was bad :P

It's like porn in the internet. People who aren't online always think it's so full of porn that you can't avoid it. After... over 15 yrs of being online in fandom, the only porny material I encountered that I wasn't looking for was ads on picture hosting sites :P
Or download sites.

And maybe like, 5 times in 15 years, legit-looking websites that were infested by viruses and opened a bazillion porn windows on your computer.

aaand with one fell swoop youd estroyed whatever credibility as a mental health worker you might have had. fandom is not a place to confront one's triggers or fears. that kind of work should only be done in a controlled environment with the help of a trained professional. what the shit even is this comment? that's dangerous

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
did you even read the comment? they're not a mental health worker, they have ptsd themselves. and they aren't telling people to confront their triggers, they're saying you need to be prepared to deal with them when you encounter them, because it will happen.

Or, you know, you could take responsibility for yourself.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is a lot more possible when you know what you're getting into before reading a fic or entering a discussion.

Then get off the internet, sweetheart. That's taking care of yourself.
