honestly, Dean is so fucked up in the head that standards like 'selfish' and such don't really seem to be applicable. dude was raised on the road as a monster hunter by a soldier who told him it was his life's mission to protect his little brother (since he was FOUR, wtf dudes). poor bastich wasn't socialized worth shit. Nature vs nurture is a HUGE consideration with Dean as far as I'm concerned. (also that's why in all my AUs Dean is like a manny or a kindergarten teacher or something. Maybe he has prize rosebushes. for real though, Sam is the one who is JUST LIKE JOHN (dat Trickester reality tho) and Dean is 'good soldier' because he loves his family SO MUCH and he wants to PROTECT PEOPLE and goddamn will someone just give this man a ranch already and let him create his own little clan world

Not in the show canon. Maybe in the comics? But I don't think those should really count as canon - they had a really shitty grasp of characterization and got details established in the show wrong all the time.

Dean did kill a werewolf for the first time when he was 16 though and SPN's werewolves are remarkably human-like. It's not exactly much better.

It was in that John Winchester's Journal, which I think is considered canon...

It's not. It's a spin off book that's more faithful to the show than the comics were but it violates show canon all over the place as well.

Link? I can't remember anything along those lines. I own the book and it's not accurate to the show. It's an entertaining read but not fully accurate.

Though for me canon is what's on the show plain and simple. Nothing else, not interviews or comics or spin off novels or blogs or anything.

This is a WIP right now (41 medium length chapters), but it's a Bakery AU set in season eight and it is *awesome* and fun and sexy and heartwarming and Dean BAKES, and Castiel bakes, and Sam tries not to be too much of an idiot in front of the hot florist next door and it just rocks.
