An anonymous comment meme is not a commission. It's not a yuletide, or a fic exchange, or anything like that. The writer is perfectly allowed to deviate from the prompt if they are inspired by part, but not all, of it. They don't owe the prompter anything. Most meme prompts don't get filled in any way. Maybe the part that you were most excited about isn't what inspired the writer, and that's too bad, but you don't own other peoples' kink meme responses.

It's not a commission and you're not owed a fill, but on every meme I've ever seen it's considered rude to post a fill that doesn't actually fill the posted prompt. If you post a prompt asking for A/B and someone gives you a story with A/C, that's pretty much universally regarded as a dick move. Some kinkmemes have a "treats" section to post stories that were inspired by prompts, but ended up deviating too much from the original request to actually be considered fills; otherwise, writers can post those fics to their own journals or FFN/AO3 accounts, rather than getting a prompter's hopes up and then giving them something they actively didn't want.

IA. Deviating slightly I can understand, but writing a different pairing than the one requested or going with the exact opposite of what the prompt asks for doesn't make sense to me. The author could post their fic elsewhere saying they were inspired by the prompt, but not post it as an actual fill to the prompt.

I do appreciate when authors ask the OP if the deviation is okay, though. That's a great way to handle it, imo.

Agreed. It's perfectly okay to leave a comment asking the prompter, "Hey, this is a great prompt and I had an idea for a fill, but it's [deviation from prompt]; how do you feel about that?" Then the person who asked for the story to begin with can say either, "That sounds great, I'm looking forward to it!" or "[Suggested change] really isn't my thing, I'm sorry." Filling a prompt is essentially answering a request; if your story doesn't fit the prompt anymore, it's really not that hard to just post it elsewhere, maybe with a note saying where the idea came from.

You're right - technically the prompter isn't owed anything. But if you're going to decide to fill a prompt, why wouldn't you give the prompter what they asked for? Why even deviate? Otherwise it's just a fic that could be posted anywhere.

OP

Awwww, are you one of the people who's filled my prompts in the past? I'm not at all sorry to bring your attention to what I'm asking for in a prompt.

When I fill a kink meme prompt, I do my best to fulfill the prompt's request. If someone's asking for a threesome, that's what I fill. If they're asking for a pairing, that's what I fill. If they're asking for a threesome, and I can't fill it as a threesome, I look for another prompt. Just because the prompt is shinier than the pairing doesn't mean I'm going to deviate from what someone requests.

I've seen the reactions from the original prompters when they don't get what they request, and the disappointment. I've always tried to suck it up, when someone doesn't fill a prompt the way I want, but I also figure, by now, people who fill the prompts OUGHT TO BE ABLE TO READ WHAT I WANT. Just like I have to be able to read what they want to fill their prompts.

TL;DR - if I respond, 'thanks for the fill', it don't really mean I'm impressed with your schlock of fucking up the request I made.

I was actually on your side, OP, but now I think you're kind of an entitled dick.

I agree. It used to be that in most kink memes any fill inspired by the prompt was welcome. Now people whine if the fill isn't exactly what they wanted (or make passive aggressive secrets). And people wonder why so many kink meme prompts go unfilled.

OP, if you want A/B/C then write them. If you can't write more than a passive aggressive secret, then request A/B/C for yuletide or some other exchange.

Really? There was a point at which it was acceptable on kinkmemes to post any random story that passed through your head while you were reading somebody's prompt, whether or not it had anything to do with what was requested? I'm glad I didn't get into fandom until those days were over, then.
