Eh, he didn't want Sam to know. People always forget that bit during these debates. He was adamant that Bobby not tell him. Sam didn't figure it out until Jake was all "dude wtf how are you alive I killed you." Granted, Dean didn't really think through how he was going to keep it a secret but it wasn't him deciding that Sam would have to deal with the same pain he had suffered when John made his deal. Sam was never supposed to figure it out.

Though I also don't know why people think Dean thought he was saving Sam from hell. There's never been an indication of where Sam went when he died, heaven or hell, and no reason for Dean to think that Sam was hellbound. Dean was saving Sam from being dead period.

At that point, Dean didn't know heaven existed. The only place he knew about was hell, so its seems a pretty safe assumption.

I never once assumed that. I figure Dean didn't have any clue where people went when they died, and didn't much think about it. But even if he didn't believe in god or angels, he certainly never thought of his mom or dad in *hell*, and i really don't think he ever thought Sam was going their, either.

ayrt

Dean was basically an atheist at the time. They didn't know that demons were tortured human souls either. IMO, if he thought about what happened when people died, it was that they either became tortured spirits lingering on earth or they just dissolved into nothingness.

Either way, the point wasn't that Sam was suffering in Hell. It was that Sam was dead. Sam was dead when he had had it drummed into his head since age 4 that he had one job and that job was keeping Sam safe. Dean already felt like he'd let John down - he couldn't stand failing Sam, too. That alone was more important than where Sam was. I bet Dean would have made the same decision even if he'd been 100% confident Sam was in heaven.

Disagree, when asked, point blank, where he thinks ghosts go after their corpses are burned/they've moved on, he admits he has no idea.

Plus, demons in season one were pretty new to him, so I don't think he thought people went to hell. Then he probably started to think about it, but Sam going to hell? Probably not. If anything, Dean would imagine Sam would go to heaven if it existed.
