I don't think talking behind someone's back should be thought of as bad. I talk about all my friends behind their backs and I assume they all talk about me behind mine sometimes. I think it shows we all have things that bother us about our friends and know them well enough to intuit what they wouldn't want said to their faces.

there's a difference between malicious gossip and talking about someone you mutually know because you care about what's happening in their lives.
I lost a friend who made no distinction between them. Apparently discussing someone you rarely see who never tells you anything is the same as backstabbing.

If I don't want it said to my face, then I want it said behind my back even less. Anyone who knew me would know if they wanted a chance to remain my friend, they would choose my face so we could talk it out like adults, because if something personal ever got back to me that I find originated from their mouth, they'd have no chance at all.
