What's the most recent book you've read and loved, as a counterpoint?

I'm making my way through His Dark Materials. It's so much cooler than it was when I was a kid and only understood like a quarter of it.

The Rivers of London series. Haven't finished it yet. It is just so dwalsnvfkenvnsdvnnnlkd I can't.

There are cheap moments, sure, and I'm fairly certain the vestigia came at least partly from this flash-and-screechy-sound special film effect, but I can overlook these kinds of flaws.

Also, I love how the author easily writes both white and black/mixed race characters and it comes out good and natural.

Sorcery & Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot (well, I'm only half-way through at the moment, but still). It's fun and I like how the book consists of two characters exchanging letters.

OMG, I love those [and the other's in the series.] And, if you're interested, the reason it's written that way is because they wrote it using the Letter Game. =)

I'm starting to think that I have to get the other books as well (: The Letter Game seems like a fun way to write a book, if you can just keep all the possible plot lines together.

Heh, I just read 'Fish Change Direction in Cold Weather' - it was super cute and brimming with happiness, a nice pick-me-up.

A friend got me hooked on Bernhard Cromwell's Sharpe series (by making me watch most of the movies and leaving "Sharpe's Eagle" on my nightstand when I visited her a few weeks ago - she's evil like that).

Now I'm reading far more about 19th century military tactics than I ever wanted to know and loving it...

Lamb, the Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. I thought Biff was hilarious, I kind of have a crush on Maggie and I thought that Josh was the best and most likeable portrayal of Christ that I've ever seen. I loved how his human side received more focus than his divine side, because it seems like a lot of people either forget or just glance over his humanity as if it's not just as important to the story as his divinity, so Lamb was a refreshing change of pace in that regard.

I need to revisit this series too. I read it when I was maybe fourteen or something, so I did get a lot out of it, but I'd probably appreciate it so much more with a re-read.

Just finished Divergent by Veronica Roth and then watched the movie trailer and now absolutely cannot wait for both the movie and Allegiant.

I just finished, and enjoyed, all of Patricia Briggs' novels. Especially the Mercy Thompson series. I'm not usually a werewolf fan, but I liked her universe and characters.

Dune trilogy omnibus? Which trilogy? I thought their were six books in the original series plus all of the prequel trilogies.

Just finished rereading Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. Dieselpunk vs. Fabricated Animals in WWI Europe, oh yeah!

Also, the heir to Austria-Hungary has to escape from assassins and ends up with a British air navy cross-dresser. Much better than it sounds.

no one belongs here more than you by miranda july

It's actually a short story collection and a few stories really stood out for me. Others were more just sad and disturbing, but that's usually how it goes with short stories.

Silk by Caitlin Kiernan. Lesbian grunge horror set in Alabama and Georgia, verrry early-90s. It's not subtle but wow, I loved it, the prose is amazing.
