What we think of as traditional African prints in things like kente cloth, (bold colors and large designs) actually has it's roots not in Africa but in Europe and India under the name Dutch Wax Prints.

Oh hey, I actually knew this! :D They explained it to us during a theater class, during a unit on costume design. It's a totally awesome process, too.
